Alina is an assistant professor in business economics and comes to us after completing her postdoctoral fellowship at the Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management. Her research interests include political economy, focusing on education, human capital, social conflict, and political selection. MBA professionals, Saint John, and Walden Pond Every year, a throng of enthusiastic and talented professionals arrive in Saint John to take on the formidable UNB Saint John MBA Program. This one year academic high-diving act demands boundless energy, nerves of steel, and a razor sharp mind. It's an ultramarathon for the brain, and those who make it through (including the charismatic Negotiation Geniuses in the photo) have a lot to celebrate. Aside from their academic achievements, these students should be applauded for their willingness to dive into the small but mighty Saint John community. Coming from all corners of the earth and mostly from enormous, crowded cities, more than one of these students has found life in our small city a difficult adjustment. But I always hope that their adventure in Saint John mirrors Henry David Thoreau's year at Walden Pond, so that they can say at the end, as he did: "I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; ... In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." (Walden, 323- 324) These are brave and ambitious people, and they deserve a round of applause!

Kicking off our graduating senior spotlights with Carlos Murillo, National Director of the Junior Economist and Junior Economic Club of Chicago Vice President! He plans to study Financial Economics at Columbia University in New York City. Listen to Carlos' takeaways from his JEC experience below. "My time at JEC has been incredible! Since sophomore year, the events and webinars have helped me formulate what I want to do in college and for my career. My interest in economics originally stemmed from the club, and I am excited to continue that as a Financial Economics major at Columbia University. I was also given the opportunity to lead on the local and national level with JEC, which sparked my love for completing tasks and growing the organization. I appreciate JEC's emphasis on mentorship - I still talk to alumni and gain insight from them, and their knowledge made the college application process easier. I have also enjoyed mentoring my peers. I spent last year meeting with almost every new member, and witnessing them go to forums and apply for the board makes me proud to have been their first contact with the club. I will continue to help JEC with whatever it needs and recommend it to any high school student."
