The Russian MOD is reporting that 144 Ukrainian UAVs attacked nine different regions of Russia overnight.   There are numerous videos from the Moscow region of UAVs attacking airports and hitting residential buildings. Unlike Russia, Ukraine is not deliberately targeting civilian buildings. These UAVs are hitting the buildings because they have either been shot down by air defence or brought down by electronic warfare systems.   Russia is trying to equate its destruction of civilian buildings with the damage caused by Ukrainian UAVs to Russian buildings. Of course, there is no equivalence at all beyond the superficiality of the images.   When Putin started his so-called, Special Military Operation, which was scheduled to last for 3 days in February 2022, he could never have envisaged that the fighting would still be ongoing 900 days later or that Ukraine would be hitting targets in his capital city and all over Russia.   It appears that Putin has fully embraced the sunk-cost fallacy of war, where he is committing ever more troops and resources in a vain attempt to make his huge previous losses count for something, or perhaps count for anything at all.   https://lnkd.in/gfMxz2Bd   #ukrainewar #osint

Bahrain’s ruler, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, this week inaugurated the newly introduced Bell Flight AH1-Z Cobra attack helicopters into the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) as part of the Bahrain Shield project. The inauguration was part of the 56th anniversary celebrations of the BDF and was the latest in a series of acquisitions that has seen ongoing development of the force. The Royal Bahrain Air Force is the first to operate the AH1-Z Cobra outside the USA. And the helicopter, along with other hardware with the BDF, will lead the flying festivities at this year’s Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) which takes place at the Sakir air base on 9-11 November. The show has grown in size and reputation since it launched in 2010, and Yousif Mahmoud, director general of BIAS, is at WDS to encourage the defence industry and its supply chain to be part of the event. “The current trend in the region is to create a local defence industry with each country now planning for the products or technology to be used, rather than just to order from outside,” Mahmoud said. “I think there are a lot of projects for joint venture discussion and the environment we have created at the show since the beginning makes it very comfortable for these discussions. I think it is more about how to get cooperation and joint ventures and projects rather than selling and buying equipment.” Major OEMs already signed up include BAE Systems which inked a contract at the World Defense Show this week. The Bahrain show features a spectacular flying display – at three hours, one of the most impressive on the show circuit. This year will feature a packed display from both civil and military aircraft, including a show-topping flying pyrotechnic spectacular from aerobatic aircraft as the sun sets over the Bahrain desert. Behold the Buddha! The famed Globemaster stood, or hovered, a benign menace, under the midday sun. There was more security than usual at the Hosea Kutako Airport, Windhoek, Namibia. It was usually just Lucia, who had by now become my friend, and just another person. Now it was a whole posse of them – of different colours, postures, and uniforms. Each of them eyed the passengers walking on the tarmac sternly. All of them hissed or hollered as I got drawn towards the snub-snout beast variously called the ‘Moose’ and the ‘Buddha.’ I had heard of the strategic aircraft painted in Qatar Airways livery but was not exactly a passenger carrier. The Globemaster or the C-17 was a heavy lifter with a war pedigree. But it was not exactly a military aircraft masquerading as civilian equipment, as I came to find out later from our aviation sources. It was owned by the Qatar Emiri Air Force though. The unique paint scheme which apparently is the first of its kind – according to the article on the Boeing website – was intended to build awareness of Qatar’s participation in operations around the world. So there, no controversy, no conspiracy, just plain purpose and good public relations. Of course, the rest of the country’s C-17 fleet are employed in combat operations and are appropriately coloured. Specs for the avgeek: The Globemaster’s wingspan and length are both approximately the same at around 170 feet. The cargo space is over 85 feet long, 18 feet wide and 12 feet high, making it nothing short of cavernous. It can carry a total of 78 tons or, 18 modular pallets of equipment, or up to 102 troopers. The Boeing article also stated, ‘In addition to being able to land and take off on short, unimproved runways, it has the highest mission capability rate of any airlifter, which means it is ready to fly roughly 90 per cent of the time.’ This did explain some of the breathtaking photographs and videos of the C-17 that had me hooked for long – landing on dirt lands, snowy terrains, and ancient airstrips – serious work that came across as showboating! When it comes to a 6th generation fighter, the airframe is only a fraction of the capability. Sensors, weapons, data fusion and battlefield awareness are just some of the major technologies we should expect to see if stars align and the GCAP project succeeds.  I think this is why we are seeing the concept model featuring a lot of last generation stealth design features (such as the pronounced vertical stabilisers) - stealth is only one priority among many. However, conceptual design is the most flexible design stage, and the final concept will likely end up looking completely different to this little glimpse.  I'm sure we will all be following GCAP's development with great interest. 

Here is an unusual sight   This video shows six Russian Su-25 aircraft flying in the Avdiivka area. It is unusual because, in recent days, so many Russian aircraft are having great difficulty remaining aloft.   David Axe from Forbes has just written a great article on this very subject (link below). Russia has now lost 13 aircraft in 11 days. It lost 3 aircraft yesterday (29 February) alone.   The list of Russian aircraft losses for the last 11 days is: ·     ten Su-34 fighter-bombers ·     two Su-35 fighters ·     one A-50 AWACS   There are varied reasons for many of these losses, including a couple of allegations of friendly fire. However, Russian bloggers (who have a lot of experience in this area) tend to make more of friendly-fire incidents than we’ve seen over the last couple of weeks, which makes me think that these are not friendly-fire at all.   For a possible explanation, we must go back to the first shooting down of an A-50 AWACs (and an IL-22M) back on 14 January. At the time, this was attributed to a Patriot missile system but this is unlikely because of the extreme range involved and the fact that a strategic asset like the Patriot would need to be parked on the front line to stand any chance of achieving that hit.   It is very unlikely that Ukraine would risk a Patriot system in that way. Two weeks ago, we did see two damaged Patriot launchers being flown back to the USA for repair but that in itself does not mean that they were on the frontline when they were damaged. It also implies that the remaining launchers are too valuable to be placed close to the front line.   I still think that Ukraine has either developed or has been given a new type of long-range, air-defence system and it used that system for the first time to shoot down the A-50 and IL-22M on 14 January. Turkey achieved a significant milestone with the maiden flight of its first domestically produced combat aircraft, named Kaan, conducted at the Akinci air base near Ankara. With the flight lasting 13 minutes, the CEO of Turkish Aerospace Industries, Temel Kotil, noted that the aircraft reached a speed of 230 knots and an altitude of 8,000 feet. This accomplishment marks a crucial step in Turkey's efforts to develop its indigenous combat aircraft capabilities. Initiated in December 2010, Turkey's combat aircraft development program aims to introduce a fifth-generation fighter to meet the requirements of the Turkish Air Force beyond the 2030s, eventually replacing its existing F-16 fleet. By establishing a comprehensive value chain encompassing technology, infrastructure, human resources, and manufacturing capabilities, Turkey seeks to position itself among the select few countries capable of producing advanced combat aircraft independently. The Kaan, boasting a wingspan of approximately 46 feet and a length of 69 feet, features two engines, initially powered by General Electric-made F110-GE-129 turbofans.
