Here's a story of how a 'WINE SHOP' rebranded itself into a Resto bar and started gaining massive success: I remember this dimly lit 'wine shop' that I crossed every day when I headed to work. The shop was closed in the mornings and busy at nights with only the male population around the place. The street was always busy but I would not feel safe if I were to walk on the same lane as this shop. Cut to pandemic shut down and this place was closed for a whole year. When they came back, It was not a liquor store anymore. It was Barrel Kitchen and Bar. A shiny new signage with a grand wooden wall stood where the shop's entrance was. I noticed a few floors were added to this building. An artwork of a wooden barrel adorned the wall. They had transformed this place with a whole new branding and business. I noticed a very youthful crowd at the entrance this time. Both men and women. And suddenly, the lane no longer seemed unsafe for me. I might even go there with my husband for a dinner date. Did you notice how rebranding shifted perspectives? I am not sure if the old shop owner is the same as the new owner but I know that the new owner saw an opportunity and took it. Both businesses sold the same product but the way one packaged it made all the difference. The new shop probably makes 10 times the money now. It is no longer just a liquor store. It's a premium space for wine and dine experience and you probably have to make an advance reservation to get in. That, my friend, is the power of Branding! The More the Merrier: Community vs. Competition in the Indie Shop World Back in 2019 when we were about to open our first deco concept store in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter, I excitedly told the news to a shop owner up the street. I was an occasional client and chatted with her from time to time. Her answer shocked me: “What makes you think that would please me?” My jaw dropped. I explained that our styles were completely different, that more shops and more variety on the street would be a positive thing. She could not be convinced. I was competition. The years went by and we moved our shop post-lockdown up to Gracia and then back down to the center when our rent doubled. Today we are back on our original street in a beautiful location overlooking Plaça Traginers. It’s perfect for us, it’s home–where we’ve lived for 15 years. When we re-opened in the neighborhood, other shop owners that had arrived since we left came by to welcome us. They featured our shop on their social media. They were younger than us–the new generation. They did not fear competition. It was a pleasant surprise, and an eye-opener on the power of community. As a member of the Gen X generation I experienced the evolution of competition in the information age. We used to keep our projects secret–if you shared too much someone might steal your ideas.  The younger generations, on the other hand, are used to sharing everything. They know that their business success depends on their ability to offer value and amass a devoted following. On social media now, I spend as much time talking about the neighborhood and the vibe as I do about what we sell. Our business is to attract people who love the atmosphere here as much as we do. The ones who love our products will be our customers–the others will hopefully enjoy the other shops and try out the bars and restaurants. Community over competition benefits everyone. How do you handle rebranding an old fashioned diner that's a local staple? First, you have to understand what makes them iconic and desirable to the community. It's risky to push change on to anyone. Second, keep the parts of the brand that are easily recognizable, even if those things go against what you're taught about advertising or branding. Third, have fun and make the brand into what you would want to interact with every day. We did just this with Fanci Freez in Boise, Idaho. They're beloved amongst customers.
