How to raise a budget for an independent film - without A listers and B listers attached? Call up some influencers. If you’re doing anything in film right now, over the past year or so, you’ve probably come across a plethora of posts and threads written by filmmakers bemoaning the broken model of independent filmmaking today. If you can raise a budget to make a film, how do you even break even once you’ve completed it? Unless you’re friends with an A lister or B lister or your uncle’s a billionaire, you’re pretty much consigned to the graveyard of filmmakers who give up having bet their house on their passion project. So goes the tenor of these observations. But could there be an alternative to this picture of gloom and doom? Recently I came across a filmmaker who not only thinks there is, he’s proving there is. For his film Woodbridge (just out!), writer, producer director Stephen Meier had the inspired idea to cast influencers who could act. Why is that a smart idea? Because these influencers have a big and dedicated following. As showhost of One Good Take, I got together with Stephen to find out more about his business strategy and of course his journey from script to screen and beyond. https://lnkd.in/gUh3zanp #stephenmeier #woodbridge #indiefilm #independentfilm #budgetingindiefilms #raisingfundsforfilms #fundyourindiefilm #newwaysoffundingfilms #onegoodtake #filmpodcast

Remembering one of my favorite Disney creative sessions. This one was for an edgy, adult-only experience in Paris some years ago. This is the first sheet we hung up in the room—a room filled with a cross section of theatrical experts, some of best live entertainment folks in the biz. Now read the huge note we pinned to the wall first. Notice that there is no story yet. Or is there? I always say that the story guides us but the promise to the audience is the experience they step inside. And I’m not just talking attractions, but shows and spectacles too. So while we had a rich Disney IP to play with, we knew our story began and ended with the audience’s experience. After all, in themed entertainment they are the protagonists in our journey. They are the ones affected, the hearts that are changed. And so we started with how do we want them to feel? What is their emotional takeaway? Get that right and we knew the story we told, the IP we invited them to connect with, would make an impact. Now, I am a writer. A storyteller. A lover of language and poetic theme; I adore a well-built scene, authentic dialogue, and a delightful twist of plot, and I use these tools in every book, play, film or theme park experience I create. But I will continue to say that in the art form of themed entertainment we must remember that our audience does not come to observe our art on display, they come to be co-creators with us. This is why theme park writers need to hone the craft of audience-centric storytelling. We must use the finest points of our art form to serve our audiences’ deepest need… to belong. Theater’s most precious gift. #audiencecentricstorytelling #storytelling #themedentertainment #immersiveexperience #liveentertainment #disney #themeparks #cruiselines #dcl #writers #showwriters #scriptwriters

Think simple is easy? Big nope on that one. Perfect example: "Uptown Funk." Yes, that Mark Ronson track that has likely made you or someone you know go nuts on the dancefloor at a wedding reception. It's a straightforward, silly, breezy song. But it was a pain in the you-know-what to record. Ronson has admitted that getting the song just right took over 100 takes. He almost passed out due to stress while laying down a guitar track. Entire instrumental breakdowns and versions of the now-iconic chorus were scrapped after being tinkered with for months. The creative process was the opposite of simple or smooth. And you know what? It all worked out for Ronson and Bruno Mars in the end. The moral of this story applies to #copywriting, too. Short, simple-seeming copy—particularly headlines meant to grab a prospect's attention—can take days or even weeks to perfect. The degree of difficulty always increases when you're paring something down to its essence. So, the next time you see a captivating ad or headline that uses its words or space efficiently, know that they probably went through dozens and dozens of bad ones to get to the published version. Don't believe me? Just watch ... your writers.
