Recycling solutions turn Victoria, #Australia’s trash into treasure.   The state’s #circulareconomy sector is gaining momentum, highlighted by the successful recycling of more than 220 million glass containers through the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).   The scheme has been in place for some time now and is currently processing an average of around 10 million cans a week. This substantial figure underscores the effectiveness of Victoria’s commitment to sustainability. Moreover, the state is working towards diverting 80% of all material away from landfill by 2030. Achieving this target will not only contribute to global efforts to combat climate change but also presents a myriad of opportunities for new business investments. Is Zero Landfill even achievable?   We’d like to start a debate on the notion of 'Zero Landfill', a term often presented by the ITAD community to their customers. What does this actually mean? ♻️ Reduce – Stop buying as much stuff! In any part of our lives whether professional or personal. Material possession collection is part of the problem. ♻️ Reuse – Don’t destroy or throw away anything which has the potential to be reused. ♻️ Recycle – Make sure the materials which are within products are recovered and feed back into the manufacturing food chain.   And, what does “Zero Landfill” mean?   🗑️Do we mean that no material at any time goes into a landfill? We hosted an extremely interesting webinar where we asked the experts to debate this: https://lnkd.in/eMtHuXnJ 🗑️Do we mean that all equipment is re-used in the format in which it was manufactured or in its component form, and if this is the case what happens to the hundreds of devices that have no second market value or those that are damaged beyond economical repair? 🗑️Do we mean that our own business does not put products directly into landfills as we pass all equipment for recycling downstream for processing? If so, does this really mean Zero Landfill or are we merely passing that action off downstream?   We’re not looking to muddy anyone’s claims here, just discuss the reality of the challenges of circularity where waste is concerned.

John Crawford, a CIWM Life Member, criticizes the Scottish Green Party's priorities and offers suggestions for improvement: Focus on Local Issues: Scotland’s global emissions are minimal; Green MSPs should concentrate on local, tangible issues rather than ambitious but unachievable goals like 'net zero' and 'the circular economy.' Revamp SEPA: SEPA has failed in its duties. Its waste regulatory powers should be transferred to Unitary Councils, with SEPA focusing solely on performance auditing. Improve Litter Management: Keep Scotland Beautiful has been ineffective. Most of its staff should be redeployed to local councils to enhance litter awareness strategies. Enhance Public Awareness: Reinvigorate the Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse, making the public aware of their street cleaning entitlements via Council Tax Bills. Separate Fly-Tipping and Litter: These issues require different strategies. Councils should solely regulate fly-tipping to eliminate responsibility disputes. Transparent Carrier Bag Charges: Legislate that traders list the good causes benefiting from carrier bag charges to prevent misuse. Restructure Zero Waste Scotland: This organization has been ineffective. Its staff should be redeployed to councils, with regular meetings to ensure objective advice for politicians. Energy from Waste Strategy: Shelve the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) and expand kerbside collections. Develop strategies to convert waste to energy, reducing landfill use. Implementing these changes would create sustainable 'green' jobs and meet electorate expectations for the Green Party. This will be a hybrid conference, organized together with our state partner, the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling (NYSAR3) whose annual conference will be held November 19- 21, 2024. The Congress will serve as a pre-conference day for NYSAR3. This will be conducted in person in Cooperstown, NY, home of the Baseball Hall of Fame (outside Albany). It will be broadcast via Whova for virtual participation throughout the nation. The Theme for this Congress is “Climate, Circularity and Zero Waste.” We particularly seek leaders of climate change and circularity to highlight how they work to promote reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost programs and policies as part of their initiatives.
