We all have moments in our careers when an opportunity opens a path we never could have imagined. For college students and recent graduates especially, determining their path can be daunting.  I had the pleasure of joining Dean Alyssa Ayres and Ambassador Hugo F. Rodriguez, Jr., CPCC, Jr., to speak to students from The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs about our own career journeys and providing guidance on how to find a path after graduation.  While our experiences spanned academic, government service and industry, we shared common advice on how to be successful in your current and future career: ▪ Hone in on what you’re passionate about and look for opportunities to support that in adjacent industries.  ▪Be a good teammate.  No mission can be successful unless everyone is working to support each other and towards the same goal.  ▪Look internally. Your next opportunity may be with the company you’re currently with.   ▪Be open to opportunities and taking the chance on them that can lead to the greatest growth.  #CareersWithoutBorders   

This is the program I wish I would have had access to in my 20’s. I really struggled to find a career track that used my strengths toward something I care about. I made a resolution in the New Year: to take more photos! Side note- I've realized I'm often the one snapping pictures, missing out on being in those special moments. But, being behind the lens shouldn't mean missing out on the experience. So, here's to embracing a new perspective! Looking back on my early days at Capital City College Group, I remember feeling a mix of nerves and excitement when leading employability sessions and work experience briefs. Transitioning from a role focused on sourcing placements was a challenge. However, those challenges have been invaluable in shaping my confidence. One piece of advice I gave a student really hit home: "Being professional doesn't mean hiding who you are." This insight helped me find my stride. I learned to prioritize transparency and seeking input from colleagues with diverse expertise when I am in need of inspiration. These steps has shaped me in to the professional that I am today. These lessons extend beyond my personal growth to benefit our work experience initiatives. Encouraging students to build genuine relationships with employers without being robotic and to ask questions if they are in need of clarity. Transparency in the work place promotes self-fulfilment as students feel valued for their identity as well as their abilities. I constantly hear business leaders say "where have all the people gone". We heard yesterday during the Autumn Statement about investment needed to support skills. I equally hear from students (who are being skilled up and are enthusiastic about getting into work) and from careers services about the difficulty faced by students entering the world of work in finding work experience, internships, placements, and their first job! There are so many benefits of making all these 4 things available and easier. We don't have to wait for big solutions to come to address the problem - sometimes all we (business leaders / businesses / brands) have to do is take a simple and quick action; such as make ourselves known and available by reaching out to those managing the processes (i.e. career services in relevant or local education institutions), be included in their directories and show up and support their homegrown local events such as this one. If you are a business looking for talent I urge you to lean in and participate in activity such as this at Royal Holloway, University of London. Both anticipation and exhaustion are running rampant on campus this morning as students return from Spring Break 2024. For those getting closer to graduation or the start of summer internship season, stress may also be a massive part of the weeks ahead. I had a long conversation with a student during spring break about all the work she has done to build her network this past year. She specifically mentioned the following: · 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 to as many events as possible to build a network of professionals at a wide variety of companies - not just the two she identified at the start of the year as her "dream companies." · 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽 with guest speakers or in-class project partners – not just once to say thank you, but consistently over time to develop and foster authentic connections. · 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 to connect with people doing the jobs she wants in the industries or locations she is interested in – not just setting up a profile and forgetting it. She has grown in confidence in asking for informational interviews or job shadowing opportunities - which have now been numerous. · 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟭:𝟭 with her professors, the college and campus career services teams, and other faculty and staff to learn about their backgrounds, understand their networks and ask for introductions. This particular student noted that she was well aware of the plentiful number of opportunities and connections to industry that are available to her in the specific program she's a part of and recognized early on that these opportunities are hers to take advantage of in support of her goals. She hopes that her efforts will not only result in a great early-career launch but in a network of professionals that she could both rely on – and give back to – long into the future. A true #Volunteer. As Dylan Jones notes, the job search is a job in itself. But when you have conversations like I had last week, and read articles like the one below, it's apparent that so many students - both in Department of Marketing at the University of Tennessee and beyond - are putting in the hard work (even over spring break of senior year) that will undoubtedly lead to long-term success.
