New stadiums, new ownership, new coaching staff, new players all have the opportunity to unlock new opportunities for brands to align with sports teams. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McIllhenney have brought their own businesses into Wrexham AFC like Aviation American Gin and also attracted others like United Airlines and Stok Cold Brew. Deion Sanders has enhanced the Nike partnership that was already in place at University of Colorado. An athlete has already spoke to the epic nature of next year's uniforms. Son Heung-min arriving at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club also brought a sponsorship opportunity with Coupang, a delivery service that is Korea's answer to Amazon. A new stadium like the Rams home of SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park has provided many new streams for the teams and the infrastructure itself. Very Interesting news today of the Nyetimber move to acquire The Lakes Distillery. The Lakes Distillery is a fantastic brand that has been going great guns since its launch in 2014. If the acquisition is confirmed then it will represent a great journey for the founders and a case study on how to build and exit a drinks brand. In hindsight, they were making strategic moves last year, that hinted at an exit, by appointing James Pennefather as CEO who was a former Diageo and William Grant & Sons executive (at the time we felt this was a great move by the distillery to get someone of that calibre onboard). For Nyetimber there are obvious benefits such as portfolio diversification, the ability to cross-sell to their significant customer base, supply chain efficiencies and a consolidation of HQ resources between the two brands. Port Ellen Gemini: Exclusive Whisky Set Marks Reopening Port Ellen, the legendary whisky distillery on the Scottish island of Islay, is preparing to reopen its doors this spring following a multimillion-dollar refurbishment, a full 40 years after it fell silent. To mark the occasion, Diageo has announced a set of ultra-exclusive Scotch whiskies, Gemini, that will sit at the heart of an exclusive new guest experience at the Port Ellen distillery. The Gemini collection is formed of a 44-year-old whisky taken from three European oak casks. It’s the oldest whisky ever released under the Port Ellen name and with just 274 sets, one of the rarest as well. To make this whisky fit for the grand reopening, master blender Craig Wilson split it into two different casks for the final years of its maturation. According to Matthew O’Connell, CEO of the LiveTrade fine wine exchange and head of investment at Bordeaux Index, interest in buying maturing casks of whisky has never been higher, as these were “all but ‘inflation-proof’” due to the strong correlation between age and value with maturing whisky. A Boot Hill is a burial ground for the unclaimed, the poorest, and those hanged for misdeeds. For some, a Boot Hill was necessary - it got them the first few steps to heaven. And Dodge City, the fabled town of the old west, has the original Boot Hill.  Boot Hill Distillery isn't located on top of the hill, exactly (it's quite close), but it is built on those stories. Images of Wyatt Earp and other famous lawmen and outlaws grace their bottles while the whiskies are made with grains grown as close nearby as possible.  The brand is, after nearly a decade, still relatively young. Its whiskies are maturing, and its focus on wheat - the staple crop of Kansas - is bearing fruit in what's already out. Remeber the glory days when you would stumble across casks dating back to 1868, 1878, 1926, and 1939?! Me neither sadly. However, that is what Dalmore did with their record breaking 62 year old. It shares that with landscape. If you strip it back to basics what you need for a new distillery is access to lots of cold, clean water, space for storing the casks, and access to market. You could make whisky anywhere these requirements are met. What makes you choose the place, speaks of the person THE LAKES EXERTS A PULL ON THE SOUL This pull has been the same for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years. Poets, artists, novelists, sculptors, have been drawn here, its fells and waters make people settle down and stay, draw more in. So it was with the Currie family. Paul may have worked in Scotch whisky, but holidays were taken back home in England, in the Lakes. He may have had whisky in his veins, but why not an English distillery in the Lake District? He could tick off all the requirements: water, land, old farm buildings suitable for conversion, potential visitor numbers; but most importantly it felt right. This is a good place to make whisky. It is a good place to be. It changes perspective, gets into your bones. EMBEDDED IN PEOPLE'S LIVES People stay in the Lakes because that ‘truth’ speaks to them, but they have to eat, and support their families. A distillery becomes part of a community, something which is especially important in rural communities where jobs can be hard to find. Its presence ripples out across the region. Working in distillation, maturation, guiding tourists, serving food, delivering goods. It embeds itself in people’s lives.
