The world’s most sought-after whisky sells for $2.7 million! For those who appreciate the finer tipples in life, a bottle of the world’s “most sought-after Scotch whisky” sold for more than £2.1 million ($2.7 million) Saturday at Sotheby’s in London. The Macallan 1926 is one of just 40 bottles drawn after aging in sherry casks for 60 years, making it the oldest Macallan vintage ever produced, according to the auction house. Sotheby’s had expected it to raise between £750,000 and £1.2 million ($934,274 and $1.4 million), but were in for a shock when the prized bottle fetched a whooping £2,187,500 ($2,724,967), making it a “new record for any bottle of spirit or wine sold at auction,” the auction house told AFP news agency. We have published today our seventh Noble & Co Whisky Intelligence Report, in partnership with Brainnwave, offering a comprehensive analysis of the fine and rare whisky auction market, focusing on the performance and trends observed during the first four months of 2024. This period has been notably challenging for the secondary market, reflecting broader economic pressures.   Key Points: - Volume Declines: Auction volumes were significantly down by 30% from January to April 2024 compared to the previous year. - Value Decrease: The total value transacted of bottles selling for over £100 fell by 36% during the same period. - Unsold Bottles: The percentage of bottles unsold at auction increased to 6.9% in Q1 2024 from 6.7% in Q4 2023. - Average Prices: Average prices for bottles were down 12% in January, 14% in February, saw a 21% increase in March, but dropped again by 23% in April. Overall, for the period January to April, the average price per bottle fell by 8% versus the same period a year ago - Segment Analysis: The £100 to £1,000 price bracket accounted for 90.4% of volumes traded, with significant declines observed in higher price brackets, particularly the £1,000 to £10,000 range. By value transacted, the £100 to £1,000 price bracket increased to 45% of total value from 41% a year ago. - Brand Growth: Glenfiddich showed the fastest growth in auction sales value (97%) among larger distilleries, while J. & G. Grant - Glenfarclas had the highest growth in auction sales volume (59%). Another great iteration of the Whisky Intelligence Report from Duncan McFadzean and Noble & Co. Broader macro issues have been impacting the secondary markets much like any other industry and the numbers are reflected in the latest performance across both volume (-35% vs. LY) and value (-36% vs. LY) of sales with #Speyside seeing the largest volume decline (-10%). That being said, the percentage of unsold bottles remained mostly the same despite these declines and as this report focuses mostly on the main, public auctions and sales data out of the U.K. and so it doesn't speak to the entire market and also can't capture a lot of the shadow market activity (FB Groups, private sales). The market still remains broadly healthy and will continue to reflect what the retail markets are seeing, we have a more conscious consumer - people are purchasing more deliberately and with a keener eye on quality, pricing, and prices. Falling price of Champagne presents ‘opportunities’ 13 DECEMBER 2023 By Arabella Mileham The falling demand of Champagne following a “splendid” 2022 is opening up opportunities for buyers at a slightly lower level, French auction platform iDealwine has said, even as the top cuvees still maintain demand According to figures from the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), champagne sales declined by 9.6% in the 12 months to the end of October as demand slowed down after the two year boost following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in 2020. It does however remain higher than figures for pre-Covid year of 2019. The Paris-based auction specialists argued that although the declining macro-economic background – inflation, war in Ukraine and reprisal of Israeli-Palestinian conflict – “weighs on the demand for champagne”, the market for high-end Champagne remained a “dynamic segment”. For example top champagnes are still selling well although the market is not seeing the same bidding wars that marked 2022. Hammer prices have returned to a level comparable to those in 2020 and 2021, suggesting something of a price correction. However, there had been price declines at auction on a number of cuvées of Brut Sans Age (BSA), it found. Based on preliminary figures, iDealwine forecast an overall increase in the volume of champagne sales in 2023, but a decrease in the average bottle price from €259 (£223) to €230 (£198). It listed its three most expensive lots of Champagne sold at auction as a selection of Champagne Salon, comprising 1 magnum 2008, 2 bottles 2007, 2 bottles 2006, and 2 bottles 2004, which reached €10,266 (£8,818) at auction last week; a six bottle case of Champagne Salon 1990 which achieved €9,014 (£7,741) in April; and a six-bottle collector’s case of Lieux Dits by Jacques Selosse, which achieved €4,632 (£3,977) in July. Notable bottles sold at auction included a bottle de Krug Clos du Mesnil 1979, which saw a 7.5% boost on results in 2022, at €4 132 (£3,548); a bottle de Dom Pérignon 3eme Plénitude (P3) 1976, which achieved €4,006 (£3,442) in January; and a bottle of 1990 bottle of Dom Pérignon 3ème Plénitude (P3), which achieved €3,507 (£3,013). France remained the leading country buying champagne at auction with 26% of the total market share, followed by Hong Kong on 15.5%, the US (10%), South Korea (9%), Singapore (5%), Northern Europe (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland), Italy and Germany (4.5%), the UK (2.5%) and Japan (2%). It’s worth noting that the combined market share of Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore accounted for In terms of its online ‘e-caviste’ offer, Champagne is the third most popular region, after Bordeaux and Bourgogne, it said. With the Clarevallis cuvée from the Drappier house selling the most by volume and the Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne 2012 cuvée the most by value. In 2023 it saw a boost of 1.2% in value terms, on volumes up 3.8%

We are delighted to publish our sixth Noble & Co Whisky Intelligence Report, in partnership with decision intelligence firm Brainnwave. In the report we review the performance of the fine and rare whisky at auction market. The key highlights are: - Volumes at auction are in decline, down by 11% in Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022 - This is mostly being seen in lower-priced bottles, with volumes of bottles selling for £100-£1,000 down by 11.4% and £1,000 to £10,000 down by 9.4% - Average prices are rising but this is predominantly a mix shift due to the weakness at the lower-priced end of the market - Volume declines worsened through December and January, even accounting for seasonality. Bottles selling between £100 and £200 were down by 20% in December 2023 vs December 2022, and 21% in January 2024 vs January 2023 - Most of the major brands have seen significant brand declines. The Macallan noted a very strong value in the quarter due to the sale of The Macallan Valerio Adami bottle - Our data shows that bottles that are “unsold” at auction are not increasing significantly in number overall. This implies sellers are being more careful in putting bottles to auction in a more fragile market - Overall, it is clear that the macro-economic climate is weighing on the auction market.
