Excellent summary of a seminar series on “(Re)Considering Planted Forests for the 21st Century,” which was hosted by The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment and The Forests Dialogue in fall 2022. The series featured a wide range of experts, including our CSO Mark Wishnie who spoke about new opportunities for linking investment in commercial forestry with forest restoration (pp. 30-33). The series also included talks from speakers across academia, conservation nonprofits, the forest products industry, and Indigenous and forest-based communities, sharing various perspectives on the future of planted forests. It is well worth a read!

National Tree Officers Conference Earlier this week TMA’s Arboricultural and Risk consultants, attended the National Tree Officers Conference, hosted by the Association of Tree Officers, Institute of Chartered Foresters, London Tree Officers Association, and the Municipal Tree Officers’ Association. Senior Arb consultant, Kim said her highlights included: “Listening about the findings of the National Diversity and Inclusion Report 2022. As an industry we need to look at how we can promote ourselves, which includes speaking to schools and colleagues, as there was a distinct lack of responses from people under the age of 25. There was also a presentation on the PhD research from Dean Bell on the practitioner experiences of the impact of tree pit design. The findings showed that crate system was consistently ranked the best. We can’t tackle the nature and climate crisis without trees. 🌳   From individual trees in our towns to agroforestry schemes on farmland, we need a mix of trees and woodlands for nature and for people. Natural England and Forestry Commission are working together to ensure that we deliver tree and woodland cover for wildlife, carbon sequestration and timber resources. Our Chief Executive, Marian Spain, joined the Forestry Commission’s Chief Executive, Richard Stanford, on a visit to Cranborne Estate last Thursday. They reviewed best practice for woodland management and nature recovery and discussed the need for collaboration to address the challenges facing the woodland sector This partnership is one of the ways we are working together to meet the government’s nature recovery targets as set out in the Environmental Improvement Plan. Understanding and Supporting Public Access to Woodlands Calling all woodland owners, managers and forestry professionals. If you have views and experiences about public access to woodlands we want to hear from you. You are invited to take part in the latest British Woodlands Survey exploring all aspects of public access to woodlands. This important new research in the respected national survey is led by a team of researchers from Sylva Foundation and Forest Research, with funding provided by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Cymraeg translation provided by Welsh Government. The researchers aim to gather evidence to understand and support public access to woodlands. In England, the England Trees Action Plan seeks to ensure that the provision of safe public access is a feature of as many woodlands as possible. The Woodland Access Implementation Plan sets out ambitions to support the delivery of this aim. Whilst these elements are relevant only to England, experiences in Scotland and Wales are also of interest and will provide important comparisons which can help guide understanding and best practice. Restoring apex predators is tough, no doubt. From their voracious dietary needs to their slow breeding pace and potential clashes with us humans, the challenges are vast. Yet, as we dive deeper into rewilding, more complexities unfold. In a recent student project at Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, University of Kent, our MSc student James Wylor-Owen worked on telemetery data from the Isle of Wight's recently reintroduced white-tailed eagles led by Forestry England and Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation. James uncovered something interesting: these eagles’ flight areas were massive, larger than many of their kind on the entire planet. 🌎 They were like nomads, moving across the landscape. These eagles were essentially starting from scratch in a new environment, needing to build their version of "ecological memory." Imagine someone plonking us on the other side of the globe—we'd be wandering around trying to find our resources, mates, etc, right? Well, these eagles were doing just that—searching for resources, and maybe even a bit of love. Allowing these creatures to develop their cognitive map of this new world is a challenge in rewilding. Getting them to acclimate, adapt, and thrive in a new home—it’s a fascinating puzzle to solve.
