"There’s a seasonal rhythm to survey work," says Matthew Hane, a terrestrial resources manager based in Eugene, Ore., who helps track and protect the wildlife in our forests. "Our program focuses on threatened and endangered species in Western Timberlands, excluding fish and aquatic species. Since wildlife doesn’t stay in one place, the surveys are ongoing. Our focus is on spotted owls, marbled murrelets and other species of concern." Our Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) scientists are assessing a variety of species for possible inclusion in the 2025-2035 PA Wildlife Action Plan. To be listed in the plan, the species must qualify as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Today's featured species is the tiger beetle. PNHP biologists spent two years studying three of Pennsylvania’s 16 tiger beetle species, which are globally vulnerable and may be declining in PA: the northern barrens tiger beetle (Cicindela patruela), the Appalachian tiger beetle (Cicindela ancocisconensis) and the cobblestone tiger beetle (Cicindela marginipennis). With large eyes and long legs, tiger beetles can spot their prey from a distance and swiftly chase it down. Predatory tiger beetles live in open areas with little vegetation – such as barrens, river islands scoured by floods and riverbank sands deposited by floods. Threats include dams in rivers that prevent flooding, and invasive plants. Week 9 is a celebration 🎉 week as I’ve passed the halfway mark of the 1000 km goal. I am also making good headway on the catchup distances from the early weeks when I didn’t have a good system in place for hitting the goal; 543 km down, 457 km remaining. Sturgeon info this week is from US Fish and Wildlife Service and is on similar species to the Atlantic Sturgeon: The Gulf sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus desotoi) is a sub-species of Atlantic sturgeon that ranges from Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana to the Suwanee River in Florida. Gulf sturgeon can grow to be 6 to 8 feet in length and exhibit similar life history traits to Atlantic sturgeon. Shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum) are smaller bodied than Atlantic sturgeon and spend more of their lives in freshwater and brackish water, though some populations have been shown to make marine migrations between coastal rivers. Gulf and shortnose sturgeon have also been impacted by dams, habitat degradation, overfishing and other human impacts, which resulted in their listing under the Endangered Species Act. Gulf sturgeon were listed as threatened in 1991 and shortnose sturgeon were listed as endangered in 1967.
