Thanks to all who took the time to join us this week on a legislative tour sponsored by the WASHINGTON FOREST PROTECTION ASSOCIATION. Attendees learned about how we grow seedlings at our nursery in Rochester, Wash., then toured our Vail Tree Farm in Rainier, Wash., which is also home to the Skookumchuck Wind Farm. These tours provide an important opportunity for local officials to connect directly with our team on the ground and gain insights into our sustainable forestry practices, including how working forests and wood products contribute to climate change solutions. The bipartisan group of Washington state legislators in attendance were Rep. Melanie Morgan, Rep. Ed Orcutt, Rep. Joe Schmick and Rep. Cyndy Jacobsen. Legislative assistants in attendance were Kate Armstrong (Sen. June Robinson), Pavi Chance (Sen. Marko Liias), Andrew Whitten (Sen. Judy Warnick) and Braden Sigua (Sen. John Lovick), plus Rebecca Lewis of the agricultural committee staff. Special shout-out to Kate, whose grandparents drove a log truck together!

🌲Large, high-severity wildfires have dramatically altered California’s landscape, including vital ecosystems like the giant sequoia’s habitat. Today, 1.5 million burned acres across the state await reforestation. Conifer seed shortages, a shrinking workforce, and limited nursery space are slowing efforts. American Forests, USDA Forest Service and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) are teaming up to break down these barriers and accelerate restoration! Together, we can bring back our forests. 🌲🌎 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dgWPDZpR

"Our 30-year anniversary is next year. From the beginning, we’ve known that our vision of ecological, economical, and socially responsible forestry as the standard for forest management from coast to coast requires collective effort from a strong, supportive community. Today, the Guild community is stronger than ever, and each member is continuously improving our collective knowledge, efforts, collaborations, and impact." Excellent summary of a seminar series on “(Re)Considering Planted Forests for the 21st Century,” which was hosted by The Forest School at the Yale School of the Environment and The Forests Dialogue in fall 2022. The series featured a wide range of experts, including our CSO Mark Wishnie who spoke about new opportunities for linking investment in commercial forestry with forest restoration (pp. 30-33). The series also included talks from speakers across academia, conservation nonprofits, the forest products industry, and Indigenous and forest-based communities, sharing various perspectives on the future of planted forests. It is well worth a read!

You can't properly manage what you don't measure. That's why Regional Director Shawn Hagan and our local forestry consultants from Steigerwaldt Land Services, Inc. are on-site at our new Flambeau River property in northern Wisconsin for operations inventory: collecting tree measurements and data to determine what species of trees we have, how big they are, and what value they have in the forest product marketplace. This information is key in determining the health of the forest and guiding future management decisions - and is just one of the ways we ensure our carbon credits are of the highest quality and integrity. New Episode! 451 - Is There a Real White Oak Shortage? with Danna Baxley of The Nature Conservancy The barrel is a magical component to the creation of bourbon and nearly 95% of all bourbon goes into white oak. But what's the problem with this? Bourbon can only be used in a charred barrel once. After that, it needs to find a new home. Now that may sound wasteful but the bourbon market is only a very small contributor to the current white oak problem. To help us better understand about forestry and the white oak supply I've invited Daana Baxley from the Nature Conservancy in Kentucky to join the show. She gives some great insight into the current state of white oak trees and what is currently being done to protect our forests. I've never known what it takes to manage forests and this episode will give you an insight into grading and how invasive species of trees continue to decline the white oak population. But more so, Daana gives us some insight if we will ever experience a white oak shortage in the future and what we can do to help protect it. 🎧 brbn.at/451

Logging has been a large part of the loss in LongLeaf Pine forests. Longleaf pine once dominated the coastal plain blanketing more than 90 million acres. Today there are just 5.2 million acres, up from an historical low of 3.2 million acres two decades ago.The encouragement of sustainable forestry practices for economic and environmental health are primary goals of TNC Mississippi and its conservation partners. Throughout the Southeast, a coordinated effort is underway to conserve and restore these rich and vital forests. Spanning nine states in the U.S. southeast, we’re working together to restore and manage longleaf pine forest from Texas to Virginia. https://lnkd.in/gRQMAQbY
