If you're interested in the #lithiumion #batteryfire problem in the US, this video on a crackdown on by Customs & Border Protection on air freight really highlights one of the big (but often overlooked) parts of the equation on keeping unsafe batteries out of our marketplace and out of our homes: De Minimis shipments. Yeah I didn't understand the significance of the concept before attending a #FDNY and #UL workshop on battery fires about a year ago either. While the CBP focus seems to be on illegal drug shipments, direct to consumer shipping also removes a layer of scrutiny that can help keep unsafe or counterfeit (in terms of counterfeit safety trademarks) chargers and batteries out of our homes and businesses. Sal does a great job explaining what this all means and why it's important.

Most of the shipments inspected originated from China, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with Vietnam-origin shipments seeing the highest rate of denial at 56%. A true achievement by the U.S. and Armenian governments to deepen customs cooperation, with economic and security benefits for both sides. Kudos to CBP and SRC for concluding this, one of the high points of this week’s U.S.-Armenia Strategic Dialogue.
