What an amazing day ☺️ 3 AM alarm clock. 6 AM flight from NOLA to Newark. 11 AM (EST) team meeting to iterate on noirpress.org & portalx.space 2PM Juneteenth panel on Black (economic) Liberation. 5PM Black Yalie dinner. 6PM Dispensary visit. 8PM Train to NHV. Today was one of those days where you feel uber favored by Divinity and in perfect alignment with your purpose. So many close calls and moments when I thought the day could fall apart. But it just kept getting better. Shoutout to my team. Shoutout to my new friends from Ebony & Louise’s important event. I’m grateful to our hosts and all my co-panelists for all the things you taught us and all the ways you challenged me to sharpen my voice. I’m grateful for all of you who came to engage in some deep and radical conversation post-event. I’m grateful to Maxim Thorne for your constructive feedback. I want those I engaged with today to know: I don’t seek to minimize the level of terror that the white structure has exacted on our communities every time we have built power. I have agitated about that for as long as I can remember. But now, the only thing that excites me is immersing myself in the truth of our infinite collective power. The truth of our incredible capacity to overthrow systems of oppression with love, strategy and unrelenting precision. I do not believe that they are more powerful than us. I can never believe that. They’ve only been able to back us into these corners because of our lack of unity and awareness of our power. They know our power more than we do. And they fear it. Which is why they work so hard—with generations-long strategies—to suppress us. But we have overcome. The very fact that we continue to lead culture just by existing should show us that WE are THEIR North Star. Please, let us continue to have these conversations. Let us continue us continue to build bigger, dream wilder. We owe it to our Ancestors and to our descendants. PS: please send me pics! #15cents #Juneteenth #LiberationfromWithin

Today marks Systemic Justice’s second anniversary in the fight for racial, social, and economic justice. 🎉 When we started in late 2021, our focus was clear: How can we empower communities through strategic litigation. Reflecting on the journey, we're proud to be a Black-led and majority BPOC team. But there's more to be done. Systemic Justice shouldn't be the only one leading this charge in Europe. The current funding landscape often emphasises uniqueness, but we argue for unity. There's power in numbers. 💪🏾 We need everyone—organisations, movements, and collectives—working together for a more just society. As we celebrate our second anniversary, we're not just looking back; we're looking forward to a future where justice is truly for all. 🌟 Join our movement! It's Systemic Justice's birthday! 🎉 Today, our small but mighty organisation turns 2. A good moment to reflect on the ecosystem of legal actors we are part of. In my latest blog post, I argue that there should be many more organisations like ours: "Systemic Justice was founded on the recognition that real, systemic change requires challenging the status quo; that it requires tackling root causes in an intersectional and community-driven way. Making sure that this happens at scale requires many more initiatives like ours: organisations, individuals, and collectives that reflect the multitude of lived experiences in our societies and that truly prioritise community needs in their work." Let's make sure we can celebrate our future anniversaries together with them 💫 https://lnkd.in/gKYAGSfN

Peter Fam, the 357th person I've met on my quest to have lunch with 500 strangers, has a keen sense of right and wrong, and the power of flawed systems to corrupt good people. Peter owns a law firm, Maat's Method, that specialises in human rights law. He represents clients against the government, the police and big business, in cases involving issues like discrimination, abuse of power and violations of privacy. During the pandemic, for example, he was very active fighting for the interests of clients who opposed vaccine mandates. To the best of Peter’s knowledge, Maat’s Method is the only human rights law firm in Australia that doesn’t accept government funding. Peter’s concern is not that government funding is necessarily bad, but that it might insidiously compromise his independence. This comes at a cost, both financially and emotionally. Many of Peter’s clients can’t afford to pay for his services, or at least not the full fee, which means much of his work is pro bono. That makes it hard for Maat’s Method to remain solvent, which naturally causes stress and anxiety for Peter. But that’s better than the alternative, as far as Peter is concerned. There were times in his career when he chose the easy path over the right path, and that ultimately triggered depression. Peter feels that many of our systems – such as our political system, legal system and educational system – are fundamentally flawed, because they force people to act in ways that are contrary to the laws of nature. If we’re not careful, a big gap can emerge between our principles and actions, through one small compromise at a time. That’s how good people end up doing bad things. I greatly admire Peter’s integrity. Most of us choose the path of least resistance, because we’re good at rationalising bad behaviour; Peter, though, tries hard to resist this kind of self-deception, even if, as he acknowledges, he doesn’t always succeed. #networking #relationships #humanrights *** Follow the #500lunches hashtag to read about all 500 of my lunches *** My website: https://lnkd.in/gidqJKQ
