Rates of vaping are rising in middle school students, with ~1 student in a typical classroom reporting past-30-day vaping, on average, across the US. Rates in high school students are dropping, fortunately. Some thoughts... I think teens are increasingly seeing the downsides of vaping -- and the addiction that can develop to nicotine. Just as teens came to understand the combustible cigarette industry as targeting them, I'm wondering if teens are building mistrust of e-cig manufacturers & their products. The teens I see in my clinic are frustrated. Nicotine addiction is unpleasant: Stopping nicotine leads to uncomfortable withdrawal (irritability, difficulty concentrating, headaches) & cravings for nicotine that are really disruptive. We commonly need high doses of the nicotine patch (21 mg) & nicotine gum or lozenges -- and for teens 17 & older, varenicline (Chantix) -- to help manage withdrawal and cravings. E-cigs, with their high nicotine concentration & minimal odor giving opportunities for teens to vape throughout the day, including at school, make developing a nicotine use disorder really easy. A lot of teens & families I see in my practice feel frustrated at how easy it is to get e-cigs and develop a nicotine use disorder. Why are middle school students increasingly vaping? E-cigs remain enticing. We have to keep boosting evidence-based substance use prevention in our schools to give students the decision-making skills & knowledge they need to navigate in a world where e-cigs are easy to get & use. To mark World No Tobacco Day, we’ve teamed up with Life Ed NSW/ACT to release important new data which reveals students’ perceptions of vaping. The survey of more than 13,000 teens across NSW and WA found an increasing number of secondary school students feel pressure to vape. 50% thought their classmates vaped every week and 20% every month, when in reality 72% of students said they had never vaped. Despite this, 25% of students saying they felt they were being pressured to vape, compared to 20% last year. This gap between perception and reality provides an early intervention opportunity which is why nib foundation is partnering with Life Ed. We know parents are the key to ensuring our next generation makes healthier choices. New video resources released by Life Ed this week are designed to guide parents on how to have meaningful conversations with their dependents about the potential harms of vaping. The new resources offer: - Information on the health impacts and laws of vaping - Tips for recognising and addressing nicotine addiction - Strategies for having meaningful and positive conversations with young people - Guidance on where to find additional support and services Click below for more information 👇 https://lnkd.in/gp7Nh_Pj #lifeatnib #vaping #lifeeducation #WorldNoTobaccoDay #WNTD

SCHOOL LEADERS... Too many school districts continue to suspend students from school for smoking and/or vaping. This needs to change. Nicotine is highly addictive and just putting kids who smoke out of school solves nothing. It is time for treatment to be held at the school. Students can receive that treatment and if the school must...provide it as an in school suspension. School policies should attempt to address the underlying addiction to tobacco in lieu of punitive measures, which may exacerbate the problem and not deter future use. Nicotine dependence (also called tobacco addiction) involves physical and psychological factors that make it difficult to stop using tobacco, even if the person wants to quit. Nicotine releases a chemical called dopamine in the same regions of the brain as other addictive drugs. It causes mood-altering changes that make the person temporarily feel good. Inhaled smoke delivers nicotine to the brain within 20 seconds, which makes it very addictive—comparable to opioids, alcohol and cocaine. This "rush" is a major part of the addictive process. While schools have an interest in prohibiting behavior that is disruptive and harmful to health, schools may consider weighing the severity of the infraction with the consequences and effectiveness of the punishment. According to the CDC, the most effective approaches to helping youth quit tobacco use are through counseling and education.
