Charlotte Johnstone reports: Explaining this dilution of the network, a lawyer at a top U.K.-founded firm believed there would be “fewer elite firms in ten years time.” “Those that remain will be operating on a global level. We’re gunning for that, and I think that helps us win mandates from independent firms like the ones you mentioned. They can see that vision too. Whether they can see it happening for a Slaughter and May or another U.K.-focused firm that doesn’t have a U.S. strategy, I’m not so sure.” Indeed, the best friends firms have very limited U.S. presences. Uria has a very small office in New York, while Slaughters maintains ties to Cravath Swaine & Moore, among other elites. Sidley Austin, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and Latham & Watkins are now among the 10 largest firms by head count in D.C., according to ALM data, competing with firms founded in the district, such as Crowell & Moring, Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer, Covington & Burling, Steptoe, ArentFox Schiff and Venable. According to our analysis, confirmed by Law360, Cravath has seen a dozen exits to Big Law firms in the past five years. The three departures in 2024 would be the second most for the firm in a year over a 10-year span, behind five in 2021.
