Universities serve as valuable hubs for researchers, yet conducting community-engaged research and implementing research findings from within these institutions can be challenging for many reasons. Many projects involving public engagement or collaboration with community partners can potentially be conducted outside the university system. However, managing larger research projects or community-focused programs entails considerable administrative effort, often requiring a paid team to work over an extended period, sometimes indefinitely. So, some entity is required to administer that longer term activity. Whether you’re looking to grow your applied research or start an implementation entity, one avenue is to establish a non-profit. While this road is not without challenges—maintaining non-profits demands time and resources—it can offer less bureaucracy, greater flexibility, and reduced administrative costs compared to university settings. At this workshop, Lee Herrin will work with participants to explore the advantages and drawbacks of non-profit organizations for research, providing a decision-making framework and offering guidance for those considering launching a non-profit entity to provide a platform for their endeavors. In Michigan, **Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs)** are part of the BEAD Challenge Process, which is currently being conducted by the Michigan High-Speed Internet Office. Today, we are really excited to announce the launch of the CyberGuardians non-profit initiative. This project has been carried out by researchers and analysts from the cyber-intelligence and digital risk analytics firm, Alto Intelligence, with the invaluable support of Dr. Manuel Carnero (MD, PhD) from the Hospital Clínico San Carlos. Dr. Carnero is a Surgeon, Researcher at CNIC, and Statistical Advisor for various national and international medical journals. We are a non-profit project dedicated to promoting healthier digital lives. With this analysis (available on the CyberGuardians website), we aim to enhance understanding of the effects of digital technologies among young people, fostering greater collaboration among parents, educators, researchers, and policymakers in protecting children and adolescents against the harms of inappropriate or abusive use of social media and digital platforms. Our efforts have focused on understanding the current situation to prevent potential harms that may arise from the proliferation of services based on generative artificial intelligence. The mission of this project is twofold: to expand knowledge on this important topic and to drive civil and policy actions for regulatory change that promotes the mental well-being of our younger generations in a constantly evolving digital environment. All data sources used in this project are public, and the main ones are detailed in the Appendix of our report along with the methodology and scientific background of this study. Our intention is to encourage other organizations in different countries to conduct the same analysis with local data to understand the extent to which we are experiencing the effects of a global phenomenon. The current publishing system is broken! ⛓️💥 The high costs of traditional publishing are becoming harder to manage. Many in the research community want to 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀. Diamond #OpenAccess is a novel approach that allows researchers to publish their work without charging fees to either authors or readers.
