8.7 million people in the United States have ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), and for such a common diagnosis, it tends to have many misconceptions. While the most notable characteristics are difficulty maintaining attention or focus with periods of hyperactivity, there are also positive characteristics of ADHD that we often ignore. What if we looked at ADHD from a strengths-based perspective? In the latest WebMD Health Discovered episode, our host Neha P. spoke with Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D., psychiatrist and founder of The Hallowell ADHD Centers, about helpful interventions, shared decision-making, and the overlooked strengths and positive characteristics of those diagnosed with ADHD Listen on WebMD: https://lnkd.in/eeE_HMuu Spotify: https://lnkd.in/efFXAEny Apple: https://lnkd.in/e7Ba_7d4 iHeart: https://lnkd.in/enAPAJ_5

This is not OK. But it's not the only issue. For those lucky (?) enough to have received a diagnosis, the follow on care available in the UK to help them deal with the very real impacts on their lives is virtually non-existent. This is an area that has been chronically under-funded in this country for years, perhaps because 'naughty child syndrome' has is only just becoming accepted by society for the very real neurodevelopmental disorder that it is. The reality of people living with #ADHD is that the background difficulty of day to day life is amplified hugely. Jobs, relationships and functions the majority would consider 'basic' are much much harder to deal with. That's not fun and it's deeply inhibiting. We need a totally different societal approach to ADHD, and neurodivergence generally - one that recognises that the range of 'normal' is far far broader than currently accepted, and that people whose brains have developed differently to others cannot always play by the existing rules of the game. People with ADHD don't just need a diagnosis, they need the rules to change. Until then, they need recognition, adjustment, care and support in order to survive, thrive and flourish in a world that needs them.

A few months ago, I started on a journey to check whether or not I have ADHD. This was partially influenced by Dilan O., who talks about #adhd here on LinkedIn. The journey was longer than I initially expected. I thought I would have one appointment and fill a questionnaire. I ended doing seven assessments in total. This was not something specific to my case. It's just how it is normally done in the place I went to: they want to be very comprehensive and minimize the risk of over diagnosing. They also wanted to make sure that I didn't have any other conditions that could be showing similar symptoms. There are screening tests online, but they are only good for screening. They can't give you a diagnosis. If you suspect you have ADHD, the absolute best way to confirm it is to talk to a medical provider to get things started. It's treatable and treatment makes things better. I documented my whole journey in my blog post linked below, which also contains links to all the assessments I was asked to do (a few of which need to be prescribed by a professional).

When it comes to supporting kids with ADHD or other conditions that impact executive functioning, it can be challenging to understand some of the behaviors we’re seeing. Sometimes figuring out why they act the way they do can be confusing, especially when it appears that they’re engaging in certain self-sabotaging behaviors. This might include (but not be limited to) avoiding certain, inevitable situations or procrastinating…even if it means more work in the long run. Or even if it means missing out on something that might be important or enjoyable. When any of the above happens, cognitive distortions (a.k.a. distorted thinking can be the culprit). That’s why in this episode, I define and discuss cognitive distortions and how they relate to ADHD. Specifically, I share what cognitive distortions are, why we want to minimize them as much as possible. I start out with busting some myths, including why distorted thinking isn’t related to intelligence. I also talk about cognitive distortions that may pop up when someone has ADHD and how this can impact their ability to fulfill daily obligations (like chores, homework, etc.). Then, I wrap up by sharing some tips for working through distorted thinking. You can listen to the entire episode here: https://lnkd.in/gKUr2ZEQ

Embrace the ADHD madness! That's right, don't fight it, ride the wave. Sometimes the chaos isn't just a hurdle, it's the secret sauce. Don't just make to-do lists, make NOT-to-do lists. What distractions can you eliminate today? Finally, take breaks. Your brain is a muscle, and it needs rest. Even Usain Bolt doesn't sprint all day. So let's redefine ADHD. It's not a problem, it's a superpower! Do you agree? Let's start a discussion. How do you turn your ADHD into an advantage? #ADHD

Changing the way parents, individuals, and schools view Neurodivergence💥 | ADHD Brain 🧠 | MSc in Behaviour Analysis 👩🏼🎓 | Special interest in Autism, ADHD, & Dyslexia
How did you get a diagnosis as a woman when many doctors don't understand how ADHD presents in women? 🤷♀️ This is a question I got asked after posting about receiving my ADHD diagnosis in South Africa. I was told that I was lucky to receive the diagnosis because it doesn't happen easily for women in South Africa. This is the sad truth and is the case worldwide, where waitlists in the UK can reach up to 7 years. I have always worked in the field of Autism, ADHD, and Dyslexia, but with children so I understood clearly how the diagnoses present in childhood and how to help parents put support tools in place. However, I didn't understand how it presented in adults yet. So when it came to starting my own business and including adults in my focus, I began researching and learning a lot. It was a lightbulb moment when I saw myself reflected in books, research papers, social media posts, and podcasts. Leanne Maskell and Ellie Middleton were the starting point for me 🙏 I told my family and friends that I suspected I had ADHD, and I was met with many comments such as "You don't look like you have ADHD", "You just feel the world differently to other people", or "No way you're just going through a stressful time". These comments aren't their fault it just highlights the lack of awareness and understanding. I was lucky to have been able to book an assessment in South Africa. Back to the question... I went armed and ready. I had a notebook with me as to all the reasons why I was ADHD, how it presented itself, and how it showed up in my childhood but was missed. This is what I call self-advocacy ✨ If you're wanting to seek a diagnosis or understand more I have a few free 30-minute slots available https://lnkd.in/dk8NNAz7 And here is a little tool that could help you along the way. It is not an assessment and cannot confirm whether you have ADHD or not, but it could be a starting point for advocating for yourself. https://lnkd.in/euFwkA4B
