The Power of AI in Music: A Double-Edged Sword. We've seen this recently with the lawsuits against AI platforms Sudo and Udio. AI is making significant strides in the music industry, offering both exciting possibilities and unique challenges. Let's delve into this from both consumer and industry perspectives. 🎧 For Consumers: 👉 Personalized Playlists: AI algorithms curate playlists based on listening habits, introducing users to new music tailored to their tastes. Spotify has already introduced this...but for me, it's pretty hit and miss. 👉 Non-musical people can get a taste of creating music. For me, the hope would be that this taste will actually get them to pick up an instrument or learn to play/create something more manually. 👉 Privacy Concerns: The data required for personalized experiences can raise privacy issues, as users' listening habits and preferences are tracked. 👉 Homogenization of Music: Over-reliance on algorithms might lead to a homogenized music landscape, where popular styles dominate, stifling diversity. We've already seen this with tracks being tailored to TikTok algorithms for example. 🎸 For the Industry: 👉 Efficient Production and collaboration: AI can assist in music production, from generating new compositions to mastering tracks, saving time and resources for artists and producers. 👉 Data-Driven Insights: AI provides valuable analytics on listener behavior, helping artists and labels make informed decisions about marketing and distribution. 👉 Ethical Issues: The use of AI in creating music raises questions about authorship and originality, challenging traditional notions of creativity and intellectual property. This concern is the talk of the town right now. 👉 Dependency on Technology: Over-reliance on AI might stifle human creativity, as artists and producers become dependent on algorithms for inspiration and production. The above just scratches the surface of what's to come. For me, this is a new era for music, just like when streaming entered the market. We're yet to know the long-term effects but both industry and consumers should remember the people behind the music and make sure that artists are fairly compensated this time around. Artificial Intelligence has already revolutionized the music industry. AI-generation tools allow creators to generate royalty-free music, and generative AI streaming products offer never-ending mood-based playlists for users to enjoy. AI-generated songs using “soundalikes” and well-known songs of popular artists being sung in the AI voice of another have been a hot topic in the news for two reasons. They sound highly accurate and have encouraged users to make their own, new versions, but there are moral and ethical concerns around them and it has inspired interesting discussions. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗖 𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬 This really interesting report from down under has just been released. https://lnkd.in/eSr-rrGF You probably know about generative AI, and some of you maybe even use it (like I do) for graphics and stuff. But, there's a lot of concern now around its use in music creation, and the impact on music creators. I did a Board presentation at a music creator organisation on this around a decade ago, when I predicted that (within 10-15 years) AI-generated music would begin to significantly impact the human music artist community / industry. Since the cost of creating music with AI is negligible, 'functional' music (stuff that people don't actively listen to and engage with, such as background music in movies, TV, games, shops, etc) would eventually largely be AI-generated and commoditised (and essentially 'free'). So, there would be fewer opportunities for human composers and musicians. On the plus side, human-created music (recorded, as well as live) would become 'premium art' that people would spend very good money on when they want to ACTUALLY LISTEN, and for 'special occasions' (kind of like good Champagne, compared to plonk when they just want to get drunk). Personal spend on music consumption would likely remain unchanged, and so it could be spread more thickly across fewer human-created works (more money for creators, per use) 𝘪𝘧 AI-generated music could be demonetized (possible, although harder to achieve within the current streaming ecosystem). As highlighted by the report, this scenario is already unfolding, and music artists are growing increasingly concerned. I don't think anyone needs to panic. Those of us who create music simply because we enjoy it will probably keep on doing that just fine. Those who derive a meaningful income from music might, however, need to be thinking about how to adjust their business model.
