With one of the largest K-12 practices in the country, PBK Architects is a great source for checking in on the latest trends. Building Design+Construction Media recently chatted with Dan Boggio, AIA, LEED AP, NCARB, Founder & Executive Chair, and Melissa Turnbaugh, AIA, NCARB, Partner & National Education & Innovation Leader, who reported that K-12 construction is alive and well, particularly in Texas, Calif. and Fla. where there’s been an unprecedented number of school referendums. Another major trend is school boards showing much interest in evidence-based research supporting learning. Consequently, more schools are requesting outdoor learning spaces, experiential learning environments and extra-curricular arts and sports programs and facilities—all of which have been shown to enhance learning for students. “In this environment we’re in where school boards are ready to adopt research-based design,… it’s the design community’s responsibility to harvest this research and then design accordingly. From an overcrowded challenge to a sustainable, forward-thinking solution, the transformation of Parkway School District’s McKelvey Primary Center (Parkway Schools) makes for an inspiring case study of collaboration for high performance design. Functional multi-purpose spaces were a priority for the District and our detailed evaluation of existing facilities and programmatic requirements helped them apply this vision. Four additional classrooms and three additional special education classrooms were added to the original project, including a future-proof design to accommodate expansion. In our shared mission to improve academic performance, we agreed on measures to improve comfort for end users of the building like students, faculty and staff, alongside conserving energy and reducing life-cycle costs. Student Housing market is like a sleeping giant, about to wake up and show everyone how big he is. Fair warning over. Consider this please, the student loan system is going to be tightening or clamping down and budget overall for universities and colleges are already stressed even before the upcoming economic cycle dips. So, in reaction many colleges and universities are looking for more ways to create revenue ASAP. So besides raising tutition they are planning to develop more students housing to capture the revenue they are currently letting escape to thenlocal mom and pop landlords around their campuses. Student Housing like all stackable & repeatable floor plan type buildings is almost perfect fit for the Modular building process. If you aren’t curious by now about Thy Modular process and associated service offerings that companies like BECC Modular Systems capable to provide; than perhaps you aren’t creative enough too.
