The most interesting thing in tech: when can algorithms protect against bias and misuse better than humans can? There's a wonderful study about Uber drivers and NYC taxi drivers that show that the latter are more likely to take you on longer, less-direct routes, particularly if you're from out of town. Why? It's not that taxi drivers are less ethical. It's that Uber/Lyft and other services have more transparency and feedback. You can see on the map if the driver is taking a direct route and you can rate them. This doesn't always mean that algorithms are better, obviously. An Uber with a full monopoly and bad intentions could be vastly worse. But it's an interesting insight into how different systems—transparency, feedback loops, competition—can help us.

Super excited the AI is on top of Dara's mind. The potential is enormous there. Personalization was the area of my interest at Uber almost a decade back. We built a state-of-the-art "descriptive" system that enabled Uber to execute personalized comms ideas from all these people in the room, using the Dara's words. It could compete with the best products on the market those days. What Dara describes as AI replacing the room of people with ideas is the "predictive" system. There is so much high quality data, that modern AI can do a better job making predictions than human experts. The tech talk I gave back in the day had a "prescriptive" system as the north star. A system that decides the best action to take and executes it. Not only it tells us what we know and predicts what will happen, but also decides what to do. It becomes possible with the recent AI advancements built on top of the infrastructure we built for the previous systems. Bill Gurley had a good point on the tendency of sticking AI everywhere. Indeed LLMs are still slow and costly, especially at the scale of Uber.
