Via auGi: As a former Hollywooder, I know how tough it is making a living in the city of angels. But this level of cross-implosion shows how critical it is for all artists, writers, producers and those who support the machine to THINK DIFFERENT.
Don’t wait for the axe. Start writing your next chapter.

I'm a composer, so I follow a lot of film production groups. One posted question recently was: “what do producers never save enough money for?” And all the feedback was about what was on-camera (costume sets actors and so forth) — here’s what I added:
I appreciate all the on-camera suggestions here. There’s no question that what goes on film is intrinsic to the end quality of the artwork But generally in an effort to appease high standards and creative visual ideas, producers inevitably run out of money during post production. And with the constant focus on visuals, VFX can eat up a lot of the dwindling budget that they really need to spend on the composition and recording of original music with live musicians.
So much production (for streaming platforms) is using sound library tracks now, or synthetic mockups of Orchestra (MIDI), but in the latter case, it exponentially increases the composer’s workload to render a believable performance on each instrument in the orchestra …and remember that composer is never paid a session fee for any one of her/his Performances. Heartbreakingly, it’s not even a question of being offered a tight budget these days.
The more common example is, “we need someone to replace our temp music and we go to festival in two weeks. Can you do it for nothing, cause the exposure'd be great for you!"
But think about it, audio is more than 50% of the film going experience, and with everybody watching movies on their phones now, it’s the audio that brings that tiny image to life - because you’re hearing a three-dimensional representation in your ears (if the post production sound department has been given time and budget enough to realize Their end of the artwork)
so: Yes, we need to spread the money around in front of the camera, to make sure that what-gets-shot is fascinating, full of depth, richness, and intrigue.
But unless you have stunning music and sparkling clear dialogue, with sound effects giving you a sense of location and music driving or supporting all the emotional cues in the film, your effort will just make a small splash, and disappear into a flip-phone.
Imagine “the Godfather” with a midiOrchestra. 🤮

Here’s an introduction to my directorial debut! So excited for the work being put into “The Flattering Word” give this article a read to learn more about it!
🎬 Lights, Camera, Avoid These Directorial Missteps! 🎥
Directors, when it comes to collaborating with composers during a spotting session, steer clear of these blunders:
1️⃣ Micromanaging Melodies: Trust your composer's creative genius! Avoid stifling their vision with overly-prescriptive instructions. Give them room to weave their magic.
2️⃣ Skipping the Brief: A clear vision sets the stage! Don't rush into the session without briefing your composer thoroughly. Share your vision, mood, and narrative nuances for a harmonious collaboration.
3️⃣ Ignoring Feedback: It's a duet, not a solo act! Embrace feedback from your composer. Their insights can elevate your project to symphonic heights. Keep the dialogue open and collaborative.
Hit the right notes in your director-composer collaboration, and watch your project score big! 🎶 #DirectorsHarmony#ComposerCollab#LightsCameraMusic
This week has truly been a perfect example of what "spinning loads of plates" looks like a producer.
This week I've:
- Contacted venues to confirm we've got funding to stage two new works across Scotland
- Arranged meetings with artists to get their new projects off the ground
- Met with programmers to discuss opportunities for us to collaborate on our current slate of work on an international platform
- Drafted three funding applications
- Connected with individuals interested in investing in a piece of new writing that will hopefully ( 🤞 ) go to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year
- Spent a day coaching a multidisciplinary artist to identify management systems that could support them keep on top of their workload to the benefit of their overall wellbeing
And that's just the headlines! It has been a hectic but very fulfilling week. If you might be interested in learning more about any of our projects please do get in touch: [email protected].
To which end, we still have some units for investment available for our Fringe production should you wish to hear more about the project. The lead artist attached has a series of successful fringe runs under their belt so it's likely to to do well - if we can make it happen! As always, though, we won't push on until we can confirm we have the funding available to pay a fair wage to the entire team so if you are interested PLEASE do drop me a line! It's a great piece of new writing with a lot of potential. And if you know someone who might be interested in learning more then please do point them my way!
