It has been a while since London 2012 and their infamous “Lisa Simpson” Olympic games logo, that caused controversy and a lot of backlash from people around the world. After 12 years we have another woman to make fun of - this time it is Marianne: historic symbol of French liberty and republic that inspired this year’s logo for Paris 2024. Even though the initial idea and concept do have sense and are a good base for an amazing visual execution, once again they have fallen short of making something memorable (for good). The meme culture is doing its thing, so there are numerous versions already out there. From my perspective, considering all the comments, I would say and agree that the logo which is combined of 3 symbols: the gold medal, Olympic flame, and Marianne, looks (at best) as if Tinder and Starbucks logos had an ugly baby. Putting the luscious lips of today's Kardashian beauty standards on a negative space of the flame, and a “Karen” hairstyle if you really look at it; sounds more like a 2028 Los Angeles brief for a logo. Plus it connects the worst of both worlds and what we get is the sixth sister: Karen Marianne Kardashian in the end. Maybe this kind of logo would be of better use on some makeup products or hair salons for middle aged women. Since they wanted to pay homage to the 1900 Olympic games, also held at Paris and are memorable for the women competing for the first time, this doesn't do it justice. In the era of being woke and inclusivity, this doesn't seem like something to be proud of as women. Our concept is based on powerful and athletic women – lets make it as feminine as possible, some make up and hair should do it!? From a design perspective, the negative space of the flame forming luscious lips and the hairstyle resembling the "Karen" haircut do not evoke the powerful, athletic image of women that the Olympic Games should celebrate. Instead, they inadvertently trivialize the representation of female athletes, focusing on superficial attributes rather than strength, grace, and determination. The decision to use the same logo for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games is another point of contention. While it could be seen as an attempt to unify and promote inclusivity, the lack of a distinct visual identity for the Paralympic Games diminishes the unique and significant achievements of Paralympic athletes. This oversight suggests a lack of effort and consideration in honouring the distinctiveness of both events. What are your thoughts on Karen Kardashian?

Exciting news! I was recently quoted in a Modern Retail article written by Julia Waldow about We Are Legends, Puma's employee-led design collective for Black creatives. It's an incredible initiative that showcases the amazing talent within the Black creative community. However, it raises an important question: Is it fair that celebrities can make up to 15% of what is sold, while the creative talent behind the success of the fashion industry is not equally compensated? As a designer, I strongly believe in fair compensation for creative talent. What are your thoughts on this topic? RALPH LAUREN BRAND REVOLUTIONISES RACIAL REPRESENTATION BEAUTIFULLY! Every so often I comment on #fashion…since, as a younger man - whilst still an intellectual - I “owned” a high fashion boutique in the #Bahamas for 11 months (before mother made me return to law school); through which I learned nearly everything that matters about fashion, design, economics and entrepreneurship. I remain involved as an #aesthete at the #finance and #educational levels; interested in the creative cultural impact of #style and fashion globally. Fashion historically and during my early years was segregated demonstrably: in those 11 months (I was 19 years old) travelling to #NewYork, #Tokyo, #Milan and #London, I came face-to-face with racial representations in the global fashion; specifically - as in films, then - it was thought that blacks could not be primary representatives of style for all races. But times have changed! Below is a #RalphLauren (RL) ad: its the first time in its history (so far as I have observed) that the iconic American brand features a Black man and woman in a loving embrace as primary agents of style. Often, RL ads feature black women mixed in with whites and the odd #Asian. Or a series of white men, in equestrian, tennis or surfing motifs with one black male. This is a departure for the brand and an upwelling of dignity in its racial representation: Its selling elegance for all peoples through a black couple. That is, just as it could feature - say Julia Roberts and George #Cloony in its Brand cover and expect blacks and Asians to see examples of elegance, now it’s saying whites and Asians should see elegance even if the image is of black people alone! It’s a beautifully gratifying thing for many reasons: 1. It deifies as it demystifies race as distinction and differentiation 2. Its message is deliberate, profound and accepted, without preaching 3. It’s the year-end feature, which sets a race-neutral tone for its global brand, using race! 4. As such, it treats and assumes the dignity of all people to see beauty in that image regardless of #race. How humane and lovely! One final notice to get at the heart of how the ad challenges us all: See the lady, yes, particularly the lady…she’s not what even blacks regard as traditionally “pretty”, forcing blacks themselves to confront their ideals of loveliness. This is how we teach #tolerance and #acceptance. It’s a radical move for the brand, done beautifully! Now…back to reading #Aristotle! I have thoughts. So. Many. Thoughts. Not all are LinkedIn appropriate. OK, here goes... As an #EquityDiversityInclusion consultant so much of what I see and experience in the world I relate back to my work and my reason for doing this work. Case in point: Nike's just announced uniforms for the US Olympic Team. 1. Remember America Ferrara's now famous monologue from Barbie about how impossible it is to be a woman? This came to mind looking at the track uniforms: Men: You can be an athlete. Women: You can be an athlete. AND you have to be sexy doing it. (the double standards and sexualization of women remain) 2. "Nothing for me without me." This is a mantra that comes from the community living movement. It means, don't design something for someone if you are not part of that group WITHOUT CONSULTING AND INCLUDING THEM. My question to Nike: were women athletes involved in the design of these "uniforms" (OK, let's just call it what it is: a bathing suit). Kudos to the women athletes and the male #Allies who speak up to say this is not OK. It's not always easy to go against the grain but it's so important. What do crystals, National Basketball Association (NBA), lingerie, and a raised nipple bra have in common??? I believe very few would miss that 🎯 ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ It's Kim Kardashian and her SKIMS line. Skims, has been making waves in the industry since it's establishment in 2019. Recently, Skims has partnered with top-tier basketball organizations such as the NBA, WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association), and USA Basketball, and even collaborated with Fendi to expand it's reach and promote it's message of inclusivity. And now, the brand has teamed up with Giovanna Engelbert, the creative director of SWAROVSKI, to create an exclusive collection of jewelry and crystal-encrusted shapewear that beautifully contour the body. With a valuation of $4 billion, Skims has certainly made it's mark in the fashion world. And with each new collaboration, the brand continues to push boundaries and challenge traditional beauty standards. It's no wonder that Skims has become a household name in such a short amount of time. Overall, the partnership between Skims and Swarovski is an exciting development in the world of fashion. Who’s behind the cameras capturing the biggest moments in sports? By and large, the majority of sports photographers are men—more than 62%, in fact. We’ve witnessed it first hand at the #Olympics. Such a disparity can deeply affect the stories being told and the athletes being represented because when all the photographers look the same, the storytelling suffers and is far from inclusive. Women make up only 32% of sports photographers and report not being taken as seriously as their male counterparts. For instance, they’re often asked to move away from the sidelines so they "don’t get hurt" and are given less opportunities. Then consider the coverage captured, and you find even more reason why we need to close the gender gap in sports media. Women’s sports are covered less than men’s sports, and when they are, the coverage is often shorter and less in-depth. An uneven representation of female photographers skews the perceptions of female athletes, which can continue to hold women back. The truth is the same here, as it is in the boardroom, in the office, and beyond: women and people of color bring completely different perspectives to the table—and to the sidelines, capturing moments that only they can, elevating women athletes and telling their stories.

I once showed a friend photos I'd taken during a reporting trip to Afghanistan. Her response surprised me: "They're so different from what we usually see." It hadn't occurred to me. I'd just shot things I found interesting. But I did know that war reporting--including photography--is often limited to certain tropes. The pix that come out of war zones are heavily focused on combat. Photographers fight to get to the front lines. And yet war--the "activity" of war--is so much bigger than that. After embedding with US units in Afghanistan, I used to tell friends that the day-to-day reality is much more like "The Office" than "Saving Private Ryan." The post from the Female Quotient below talks about the gender imbalance in sports photography, and the downstream impact that has on women's sports. Photographers capture what they see. The pictures that get published create a narrative. The narratives influence what society as a whole believes. When you only have certain eyes looking—and seeing—then, only certain photos get published. Only certain narratives emerge. Only certain beliefs get entrenched. This, in part, is why we often talk about why it's so important to have a wide variety of people in the workplace. When everyone sees in the same way, so much is missed.
