As we approach National Intern Day at the end of July, it's the perfect time to reflect on how we can create more inclusive, mutually beneficial relationships with interns in our workplaces. Since its inception in 2017, this day has highlighted the often-overlooked impact interns have on our organizations. For too long, we've viewed internships as a one-way street, a chance for young people to learn the ropes of the professional world. But what if we've been looking at it all wrong? What if, in our rush to teach, we've overlooked the profound lessons our interns can teach us? A few changes I'd recommend; ✅ Challenging our own biases about what interns are capable of. ✅ Actively seeking out and implementing intern suggestions. ✅ Treating interns as full-fledged team members, not just temporary help. Do you have any more tips? #recruitment #internship #culture

Portland companies - I know there is a lot of economic uncertainty coming up for 2024 if it's gonna be a big growth year or a grind, but I can tell you that The Script (formerly Emerging Leaders) has changed the trajectory of Thesis from when we started participating 8 years ago as a 50-employee agency that was performing okay to now a 300-employee agency that is able to deliver creative + strategic services to our clients we never dreamed of back then. Of course, this isn't all due to participating in an excellent diverse internship program, but it was a significant mindset shift that positively shifted our culture and allowed us to attract the very best talent over the past 8 years. This article expands on this whole notion. https://lnkd.in/gDhheeAE

🌟 How It Feels to Be an Intern: A Call for Empathy and Kindness 🌟 Embarking on an internship can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Having experienced this journey myself, I understand the challenges and excitement that come with it. One key to making this experience smooth and enriching lies in how we, as team members and mentors, interact with our interns. Here are some insights on how to make interns feel truly welcomed: > A Warm Smile Goes a Long Way: A genuine smile can be incredibly reassuring. As interns step into a new environment, seeing friendly faces can help ease their nerves and foster a sense of belonging right from the start. > Kind Introductions Matter: Take the initiative to introduce yourself and engage in a casual conversation. A friendly “hello” and a brief chat about your role can help break the ice and make the intern feel more at ease. > Foster Comfort and Inclusion: Creating a welcoming atmosphere is crucial. Encourage open communication and make it clear that questions are welcomed and valued. Providing a supportive environment helps interns feel confident in their role and more willing to contribute. > Avoid Awkward Stares: Interns may already be feeling self-conscious in their new role. Instead of making them feel like they’re being scrutinized, offer guidance and constructive feedback in a supportive manner. This approach will help them learn and grow without added stress. > Encourage Participation: Actively involve interns in team activities and discussions. Making them feel like a valued part of the team can enhance their experience and help them develop a stronger connection to their work and colleagues. >Provide Regular Feedback: Constructive feedback is essential for growth. Offering regular, encouraging feedback helps interns understand their progress and areas for improvement, boosting their confidence and skills. > Be Patient and Approachable: Understand that interns are in a learning phase. Patience and approachability from team members can greatly influence their learning curve and overall experience. Interns bring fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to the workplace. By creating a supportive and inclusive environment, we not only help them grow but also enrich our teams with their energy and ideas. Have you had any experiences with your interns that highlighted the importance of a welcoming environment? Ping me! I’d love to hear your stories and tips for creating a positive internship experience! #Internship #Mentorship #ProfessionalGrowth #WorkplaceCulture #SupportAndEmpathy #InclusiveWorkplace

How to make your company as unattractive to young people as possible: Companies continually try to attract young people into their workforce in the most cliche of ways. • We have such a cool culture! • You’ll have SO much fun working here! • No suits in sight - wear whatever you want! • We have trendy office perks - look at our pool table and unlimited cold brew! Yet at the same time they also have a toxic culture, misogynistic old-school leaders, rigid policies and low salaries. Expectation and reality collide. Don’t be like these companies. Instead spend some time with your young talent and: • Learn more about their motivations • Ask them about their goals in the next 3-5 years • Find out what company benefits would actually be attractive to them • See how this feedback can work into your company’s operations and policies • Bring on PAID interns - unpaid internships aren’t going to bring you loyal or inspired interns. There is incredible talent coming in our next generation of workers, but they aren’t attracted to or motivated by the same things we were upon entering the workforce. Making the mistake of assuming you can operate in the same way will not lead to the best young minds working for you.

Interns are the future of our workforce, and how we treat them today can shape the leaders of tomorrow. So companies, here’s how you can make the most out of their internship programs while ensuring interns have a positive and enriching experience: 1. Create a Welcoming Environment.. make interns feel like part of the team from day one. Introduce them to colleagues, involve them in meetings, and maybe even include them in the office inside jokes (just explain the jokes first, we don’t want them to think we’re lame) 2. Provide Real Work Experience.. interns should be doing more than just fetching coffee and making copies. Give them meaningful projects that allow them to learn and grow. (Unless they’re fetching coffee for themselves, in which case, teach them how to use the espresso machine like a pro. Latte art, anyone?) 3. Offer Mentorship and Guidance.. pair interns with experienced mentors who can offer advice, feedback, and support. Think of it as a Jedi/Padawan relationship - minus the lightsabers. 4. Recognize and Appreciate Their Efforts.. a little recognition goes a long way. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small. A “Great job!” or “You nailed it!” can boost their confidence and motivation. And hey, a burger party never hurt anyone. Bonus points if there’s milkshake. 5. Offer Constructive Feedback.. help interns learn from their mistakes with constructive feedback. Be honest but kind. Remember, they’re here to learn, not to be perfect. After all, we were all interns once (and probably made a few epic blunders ourselves like pressing 100 copies instead of 10). 6. Prepare Them for the Future.. equip interns with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed beyond the internship. Resume reviews, mock interviews, and career advice can set them on the right path. Just don’t forget to slip in some “what not to do” stories from your own past! Let’s nurture the next generation of professionals and maybe even learn a thing or two from their fresh perspectives (and TikTok trends). #Suppagood #Internship #FutureLeaders #CareerDevelopment #Mentorship #CompanyCulture #ProfessionalGrowth #InvestInTheFuture

Hello readers! Hope you enjoyed the previous post, let us further discuss the reasons why a company looks to hire interns? And also we will welcome another intern to join our team. 🤔 Previously we discussed how interns helped in bringing better innovation and fresh ideas to the organization, 💡 in this post let’s add a few more to our discussion: -Increased Productivity 💹 • Project Assistance: Interns can take on specific projects or tasks that might otherwise be postponed due to a lack of resources, thereby increasing overall productivity. • Support for Full-Time Staff: They can help with routine tasks and free up full-time employees to focus on more complex and strategic work. -Cost-Effective Labor 💸 • Lower Labor Costs: Interns are typically compensated at a lower rate than full-time employees, providing a cost-effective way to get work done. • Budget-Friendly: For startups and small businesses, interns can provide necessary support without significantly impacting the budget. -Enhanced Employer Brand 🙌 • University Partnerships: Building strong internship programs can enhance relationships with universities and academic institutions, leading to a better reputation and more interest from top students. • Corporate Social Responsibility: Offering internships can be part of a company’s CSR initiatives, contributing to community development by providing valuable work experience to young people. To understand more, stay tuned, until then, Team Raasa karts would like to welcome another intern in harendra singh, who’s currently pursuing Bachelors in Business Administration from GLA University He’s s a promising new addition to our team, bringing fresh ideas and a strong commitment to excellence from day one. Team Raasa Karts welcomes you whole heartedly in our team and we wish you have a great learning experience during your time here! 🤗 #intrern #experience #productivity #ideas #raasakarts

In the bustling corporate jungle, where office plants and stale coffee reign supreme, there's a lesser-known yet potent secret weapon for success: the internship program. Yes, you heard it right! Those short-term gigs often considered mere resume fodder can actually be a secret weapon for corporate success. I am sure we all love our morning cup of fresh coffee! So why is it that we have a problem with interns? I for one believe that interns are like that first cup of coffee in the morning—fresh, invigorating, and sometimes a bit too strong. They are breath of fresh air in a stuffy office They bring new ideas, enthusiasm, and the latest knowledge from their academic bubble. Plus, their energy is contagious—they might just inspire the rest of the team to wake up before their third cup of coffee! By investing in internships, companies get the chance to evaluate potential future employees over a few months, rather than relying on a 30-minute interview where everyone is on their best behaviour. Plus, it's a chance to see who can handle the coffee machine without breaking it. Let’s face it—interns are a cost-effective way to get work done. While it’s important to pay interns fairly (they need to buy ramen and pay for their Spotify subscriptions, after all), they are generally less expensive than full-time employees. It's a win-win: companies get the extra hands they need, and interns get valuable experience. Just make sure you’re giving them actual work and not just an endless stream of filing and coffee runs. A robust internship program can bolster your company’s reputation. Word spreads quickly in university circles and being known as a great place for internships can attract top talent. It also provides your current employees the opportunity to develop their mentorship skills. It’s like parenting, but without the midnight feedings and teenage angst! I believe it’s time that we “woke up and smelt the coffee”, don’t you? #internships #nextgen #foodforthought #HRleaders Kiran Aidhi, ACC - ICF Krithivasan S Benna Jacob Yogita Bhagchandani Vinky Vijan Zunavish Consulting

🔹🌟 I/O Psychologist & Training/Placement Assistant | Internship Experience in DEI, Performance Management, and Employee Engagement 🌟🔹
After almost a year of interning in various settings, I've come to understand how crucial internships are for students entering the workforce. They provide essential insights into real-world operations and industry norms, shaping our attitudes and approaches to work. Positive experiences boost motivation, driving us to succeed, while negative ones can be demoralizing. Supportive managers play a vital role in nurturing our professional growth, while toxic management hinders it, affecting our confidence and development. Thus, the quality of management significantly impacts interns' overall experience and career trajectory in the workplace. Establish Clear Expectations Set clear expectations by furnishing interns with a detailed document delineating their assigned projects, expected skill development, and internship objectives before commencement. Conduct an orientation session to discuss these guidelines in-person, allowing interns to seek clarification. Ensure comprehensive onboarding packages outlining goals, responsibilities, and key dates are provided. Schedule regular check-ins throughout the internship to evaluate progress and ensure expectations are being fulfilled. Provide Guidance and Support Arrange regular one-on-one sessions with interns to offer guidance, address inquiries, and provide support. Pair interns with seasoned team members to act as mentors, offering further guidance and advice. Cultivate an open-door policy, encouraging interns to approach you or other team members with any questions or concerns they may have. Foster a culture of feedback by prompting interns to seek input and suggestions for improving their work. Assign Meaningful Work Offer interns substantive tasks like shadowing team members, participating in client meetings, and contributing ideas to ongoing projects, rather than solely administrative duties. Assign them a project aligned with their interests to facilitate a meaningful contribution. Prior to commencement, discuss interns' skills, hobbies, and career aspirations to tailor assignments accordingly. Maintain engagement and motivation by aligning tasks with interns' interests whenever feasible. Encourage Learning and Growth Encourage interns to utilize online resources like webinars and courses, and attend industry events with covered registration fees. Develop individual growth plans outlining desired skills and actions. Regularly assess progress through scheduled interactions, offering additional assistance as required. Recognize Achievements Publicly recognize interns' achievements and milestones in team meetings, email statements, or social media shoutouts. Reward their efforts with diplomas or other tokens of appreciation. Establish a peer recognition system allowing teammates to nominate interns for exceptional contributions. Encourage interns to showcase their work in team meetings or presentations to highlight the organization's impact. #internship #interns #manager #support #guidance #growth

Learning & Growth Partner | Leaderonomics | Believes that learning transcends age and status | HRDC Certified
Leading the Internship Team at Leaderonomics this year was an incredible privilege. While juggling the demands of daily operations, crafting time to intentionally develop our interns proved both challenging and rewarding. I'm deeply grateful for the council's unwavering commitment to thoughtful decision-making. Their willingness to engage in open discussions and consider diverse perspectives has been invaluable. Together, we've navigated tough calls, always striving for the best outcomes for our interns. As I reflect on the year gone by, I'm filled with immense pride for the accomplishments of our interns and humbled by the lessons I've learned along the way: 1. Embrace the Power of Unconventional Ideas: Don't be afraid to break free from templates and preconceptions. When embarking on new endeavours, allow your creativity to soar. 2. Unleash the Innovative Potential of Interns: Foster a culture of psychological safety where interns feel empowered to share their ideas. You'll be amazed by the sparks that ignite. 3. Embrace the Multifaceted Nature of Individuals: Recognise that everyone brings a unique blend of perspectives and experiences. Approach each intern with an open mind and appreciate their individuality. 4. Eliminate Biases through Competency-Based Assessments: Go beyond traditional interview methods to identify hidden gems. Competency-based techniques reveal true potential, regardless of self-expression or articulation skills. 5. Provide Clarity and Consistent Support: Clearly communicate expectations and establish a structured development pipeline. This instills a sense of value and empowers interns to believe in themselves. 6. Respond to Misbehavior with Empathy and Understanding: Instead of reacting impulsively, approach challenging situations with empathy and authenticity. Seek to understand the underlying issues and guide interns towards positive growth. As we look towards 2024, I aspire to deepen my commitment to humanistic leadership, fostering a supportive environment where both council members and interns thrive. Cheers to the successes of the past year and to an even brighter future ahead! #lsm #leaderonomics #superinterns #internship #humanresource #interns #lifeatleaderonomics
