As a member of the Fair Education Alliance, we are joining in this call to the new Government to prioritise a fair education system - one where no child’s educational success is limited by their socioeconomic background.   We strongly support this key recommendation:  "To prioritise an education system that prepares every young person to thrive in work and life. Alongside strong academics, our education system can build essential skills, with a universal framework to monitor progress, and we can collect comprehensive data about the wellbeing of young people to inform our work. It’s essential that, throughout, we listen to young people themselves.”     A focus on preparing young people for their higher education pathway and, in turn, their future careers, resonates with the continuous improvement of our programme models to incorporate essential skills-building initiatives. We support the Fair Education Alliance's 'Priorities for a New Government' report, launched today! We believe that fair education is achievable. As a key priority in the journey to a fairer education system, the report calls for the new government to: "collect comprehensive data, across agencies, on the wellbeing of young people, as #BeeWell have done, so local governments, schools, the third sector, and funding bodies can better understand where investment is needed, what work is improving wellbeing, and how data can stimulate action across society." We are proud to be leading the way with our youth-centred approach to wellbeing measurement. Using a co-designed survey, we listen to the voices of as many young people as possible; publish the results privately to schools and publicly by neighbourhood; and drive action across society to improve young people’s wellbeing. #BeeWell’s mission is to see this approach implemented nationally by 2030, and we very much hope to work together with the new government to make this happen! The Fair Education Priorities for the new Government adeptly summarises the challenges we face if we want to make the education system fairer for all young people.

How do we genuinely achieve fair education for all? Fair Education in 2024: Priorities for a New Government Following the outcome of the General Election and the Labour Party's ascension to government under Keir Starmer, the Fair Education Alliance has launched "Fair Education in 2024: Priorities for a New Government". This document, crafted by a coalition of nearly 300 organisations including Tees Valley Education Big Education Chartered College of Teaching and many others, addresses the widening educational disparities between children from low-income backgrounds and their wealthier peers, which are currently at their most pronounced in a decade. The alliance emphasises the need for comprehensive government policies aimed at tackling inequality across all educational stages, from early childhood to lifelong learning and from local to national levels. Each priority outlined in the document includes recommendations for policy actions, showcases successful practices from member organisations, and extends an invitation for collaborative solutions with the government. Part 2 of 3 Today, higher education continues to be a driver of social mobility and equality. It offers a pathway out of poverty and into the middle class for many, and initiatives like affirmative action and need-based financial aid aim to level the playing field. However, these initiatives also face challenges and controversies, reflecting the ongoing struggle to balance equity and meritocracy in higher education. The role of universities in fostering critical thinking, informed debate, and tolerance is more important than ever in our increasingly polarized society. A liberal arts education, in particular, is crucial for developing well-rounded citizens capable of critical thought and engagement in democratic processes. Universities serve as forums for diverse ideas, where students learn the value of understanding and respecting different perspectives – a cornerstone of democratic society. Despite its ideals, American higher education faces significant challenges. The rising cost of tuition and the burgeoning student debt crisis have raised questions about the accessibility and sustainability of higher education. As costs escalate, the risk of widening the gap between different socio-economic groups grows, potentially undermining the democratic goal of equal opportunity. Another major debate is the balance between vocational training and liberal arts education. While the former directly addresses the nation's workforce needs, the latter is often viewed as essential for producing well-rounded, critically thinking citizens. Revitalizing American Democracy Through Education Reform  - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gj2Whdrp This Article proceeds as follows. Part II explores how socioeconomic inequality, which narrowed in the generation after World War II, grew dramatically after the Cold War due to the enactment of neoliberal fiscal policies of the Reagan Administration. Part III describes how the country’s socioeconomic inequality risks political authoritarianism. Part IV analyzes the requirements for maintaining a liberal democracy governed by the rule of law and describes the risk of democratic retrogression in the zero-sum world of socioeconomic stagnation. Part V provides a brief primer on advances and setbacks in expanding education opportunities in the U.S., while part VI examines the federal government’s role in K-12 public education. Part VII discusses unequal access to higher education, while Part VIII provides a detailed explanation of the government’s current role in higher education. Part IX is my proposal for Congress to implement conditions on access to federal education subsidies to improve primary, secondary, and tertiary education nationwide. Part X is a brief conclusion that calls for immediate attention to my proposal to avoid the risk of political authoritarianism and further democratic retrogression.
