12th May 2024. SL Quantity Surveying (SW) Limited, showcased its commitment to community engagement and philanthropy today by participating in the Exeter Community Run. The event, held in support of the Exeter City Community Trust Trust, saw the company's team members take on the scenic route from Exeter Quayside, through Riverside Valley Park, and back to the finish line at Haven Banks. The route unfolded through Riverside Valley Park, treating participants to a visual feast of natural beauty. Lush greenery, meandering waterways, and vibrant flora provided a picturesque backdrop for the run. Amidst the serenity of the park, SL Quantity Surveying (SW) Limited's team members demonstrated their endurance and resilience, navigating the course with unwavering determination. Supporters lining the route cheered on the runners, offering words of encouragement and admiration for their dedication to the cause. The camaraderie among participants, fuelled by a shared commitment to community welfare, propelled SL Quantity Surveying (SW) Limited's team forward as they pressed on towards the finish line. As the final leg of the run brought them to Haven Banks, a sense of accomplishment filled the air. Crossing the finish line, SL Quantity Surveying (SW) Limited's team members rejoiced in their collective achievement, knowing that their efforts had contributed to the greater good of the community. SCACED Member Spotlight: The impact of Southeastern Housing and Community Development's "Blight to Bright" program was recently profiled by The People Sentinel newspaper. The program, Blight Reduction Innovation to Generate Housing Transformation (BRIGHT), was developed by Southeastern Housing and Community Development to address blight in various municipalities also struggling with a lack of attainable housing. After the City of Barnwell approved the program late last year and initially funded the program with $100,000 of American Rescue Plan Act dollars, eleven properties have been addressed by the BRIGHT program with twenty-two more properties identified. Earlier this year Southeastern Housing and Community Development also received $150,000 grant from the Community Economic Development Fund (CED Fund), which SCACED administers as funds are available, doubling the funding for the BRIGHT program and also creating a small down payment/closing cost assistance program. ⭐🥾🌊For millions of us, the country’s network of paths is the main way we get out into the countryside and access nature. Whether spreading out from towns, cities and villages or winding along our coastlines, they act as a gateway to the outdoors. But while our paths are open to us all, there are barriers hiding in plain sight which prevent far too many of us, especially those with reduced mobility, from enjoying their benefits. According to a study conducted by Natural England, over 20 per cent of people living in England cannot currently use our network of public rights of way due to mobility issues. 🏘𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐍𝐎 𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐏𝐒 𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 – Even in the rain ⛈it was good to meet with 7NEWS Sunshine Coast 🎤 to respond to questions regarding the requested use of state government owned land to address our communities need for temporary accommodation for our workers👷♂️. This site, previously used for camping with facilities to accommodate, still sits unused after 5 years of efforts to see it being utilised to benefit our community. Yes, it needs some work, and yes, it is just outside the Noosa Electorate boundary. However, it was originally in the Noosa Shire, with facilities made possible by former Noosa Councillor and community stalwart, Brian Lindfield, who raised a million dollars to do so. After years of being told that this and other sites we have identified for residents’ tiny homes, or for visitors and their campervans to park overnight are not suitable, I ask a question. Given nowhere has been identified by governments over these years, at what point will the reasons why we ‘can’t’ turn into ‘how we can’? We have at least 2 years until our affordable housing projects in the pipeline are realised, and our workers cannot keep sleeping in their cars until then. We also have campers parking illegally as there is never available spots in caravan nor RV parks, continuing to create anger for all. Utilising a portion of this site to address these needs would not displace current users including our fabulous RYDA program 💛 and until any level of government can offer a solution, I will continue to request the Minister to intervene. The rationale that it is too far from services makes no sense as our workers have cars. Being 5 minutes’ drive from Noosaville 🚗 walking distance to a café, service station and shop, if public transport is required, we can request an extra stop! There is even a caretaker’s cottage for onsite management 🏚. We need solutions now, not endless excuses! PS. The joy of giving back! Sharing a new angle which is different from the professional development. Often we are caught-up in our daily lives and think there is no time to look beyond our own professional / personal developments. Sometimes, we do get an opportunity of coming-out of our comfort zones; most of the time, we have the tendency of ignoring it but if we try to do things differently, the inner joy it brings to us is beyond description. On these lines, sharing the last two years of efforts that are different from aiming for our own professional developments.  Having a place in a village (Kais, close to Kullu, Himachal Pradesh), I have been spending some time here for the past few years (2020 onwards). Last year, Himachal was faced with super heavy rains and many places including our village, several crucial bridges (for the flow of traffic between Manali to Kullu) were damaged. At one time, there were 4000-6000 vehicles stuck in Manali that needed to be eased out. It just happened that one of the newly constructed bridges on Beas river (at Raison) was the main source left for easing out the traffic. Being very close of our place (around 5 kms; my morning walk route also), I was very much familiar with the technical challenges that one would face while taking this route from the old national highway - with a sharp U turn going to this bridge, couple of blind spots at some places and the tar road was not yet built - the road was all muddy - emagine handling the heavy bumper to bumper traffic on this road. After spending a few early mornings to facilitate the smooth traffic flow was such an enjoyable experience that I never had while running my professional life! Learned a lot to apply discipline strategies with the badly jammed traffic and an anxious tourist crowd dying to come-out. In addition, to provide support to several damaged houses, our community at the Kaisville Country Homes (in Kais) raised funds in 24 hrs and architected a strategy for the food packages delivery to remote places that were hard to reach; several of my colleagues from our site did a silent, commendable job on this project. Encouraged by this, we quickly raised another round of funds in the next 2-3 weeks and took care of some major damages caused by floods in our village.   Fast forward to June 2024, some of us from our Kaisville residential  community decided to make some efforts to clean our "Kais Nallah" that has become a garbage dumping place over the years - this was truly fun, at the same time, highly satisfying.  Even though these tasks are not a part of our regular programs, they fill you up tremendously in many ways other than what we are trying to achieve in our daily professional lives.   Our learning in all this: These mountain places are very delicate and need to be well-taken care off while visiting them; if not handled properly, we are going to loose "our precious treasures" that bring so much joy to our lives when we visit such serene places.

The City of Gainesville - always - does A LOT. We have more plates spinning, more irons in the fire, per capita, than most cities. You could argue (and many do) that we do too much. But every now and again we find ourselves in a position where having all these disparate irons in the fire turns out very, very well for all our neighbors. Let me tell you a quick story, if I might. Last year we entered into agreements to help fund four different affordable housing endeavors totaling more than 200 homes of various styles. We did that with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Most of those units (about 205) are still in progress and I expect they’ll break ground this year, per an update the commission received this past Thursday. Unfortunately, on January 18th we learned that one of the projects, Creekside Commons, has been discontinued by the developer, shelving 12 affordable homes, but freeing-up $600,000 of our ARPA affordable housing commitments. You probably already know that on February 15th we were able to use that money (and some other redirected ARPA funds) to address the crisis in unsheltered folks living on SE 4th Place and create new shelter opportunities with our partners at GRACE Marketplace. That’s one community win that happened because our city works with local developers to develop affordable housing AND because we take lead responsibility for sheltering our chronically homeless sisters and brothers. Part II of this (increasingly complex) story is that there’s another - entirely related - community win that happened because we have a long-standing commitment to a healthy and robust tree canopy in our city. Creekside Commons would have been built on a parcel of about ten acres located just south of NW 39th Avenue along the banks of Hogtown Creek (hence the name.) With the development falling through, the land became available for sale. Our city has a decades-old conversation about placing the land surrounding Hogtown Creek into conservation. Our larger community is committed to conserving natural areas, of course, and there’s always the possibility of creating a connected greenway along the creek (much of which already exists at Loblolly and Ring Parks.) A supporting mechanism for this is the tree mitigation fund, which developers pay into when they take down high-quality existing trees. That fund only has a few potential uses, and one of those uses is purchase of conservation land. I think you can see where this story is headed. Our team was able to negotiate a purchase (below asking price) for the full 9.65 acres and the commission approved the purchase on March 7th. SO … because we “Do too much,” the City of Gainesville was able to turn the potential loss of 12 (yet-to-exist) affordable homes into shelter for 30 folks with no roofs over their heads AND place nearly ten acres of fragile creekside land into permanent conservation. All within 60 days. I think that’s a pretty fine story to tell.
