Always a pleasure to welcome Football Beyond Borders into our London office, who were with us last week for a Challenge Day.
Football Beyond Borders work with young people from areas of socio-economic disadvantage who are passionate about football but disengaged at school. The UK-based charity aims to equip them with the skills they need to make a successful transition into adulthood.
During the day, a group of 15 teenagers came in to gain a better understanding of the different career paths available within sport and were even tasked with coming up with their first ever campaign pitch. A rewarding day for everyone involved! ⚽

Our decision to partner with Sported back in the early days of the consultancy stemmed from a shared belief in the #powerofsport and #physicalactivity to really bring about positive change in young people’s lives and strengthen communities across the UK.

Our Work
Our team at Nicky Affleck Consultancy Ltd engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of Sported’s Connected Communities model. This involved facilitating workshops and community groups across London to understand the programme's benefits and engagement levels. Through detailed research and development, we provided a full report with actionable recommendations for future initiatives.
The Connected Communities model is vital in creating resilient, inclusive communities. It highlights the importance of local partnerships and stakeholder engagement, demonstrating that collaboration at the grassroots level can lead to substantial, positive changes. Our expertise in stakeholder engagement and workshop facilitation was crucial in uncovering these insights and providing strategic direction.
Key Learnings
One of the most significant learnings was the underestimated value of peer learning within community groups. This insight has prompted Sported to revamp their member engagement strategy, emphasizing peer learning and networking to maximize impact. Our regular, open, and honest communication with Sported ensured a shared understanding of needs and outcomes, leading to effective decision-making.
Our Expertise
This project showcased our consultancy's strength in research and development, stakeholder engagement, and workshop facilitation. We are proud of the thorough evaluations and clear, strategic insights we provided, which have already led to tangible results for Sported.

Don't get me wrong, I love Premier League football and the excitement it brings, but one of my major concerns is the unequal distribution of wealth within the league. It would be wonderful to see a portion of the wealth trickle down to support grassroots football. Witnessing a player like Kevin De Bruyne facing a yearly tax bill of around £10m, which could sustain a local club for centuries, is disheartening.
I strongly believe that it's important for the working classes to support their local non-league football clubs more actively. To this end, I have been promoting a GoFundMe page and seeking investment and sponsorship to help our club thrive. Our efforts to bring the club back to our town have been recognised, and although the road ahead may be challenging, we are committed to overcoming obstacles.
I have been reaching out to influential figures in West Lancashire to seek advice and collaboration, aiming to create a think-tank for the betterment of our club. While financial support is crucial, their guidance and expertise are equally valuable. I plan to establish these connections in the coming weeks regardless of any external factors.
In a town as populous as ours, lacking essential facilities such as a hospital, a railway link, or a sports centre, it would be a missed opportunity for local leaders not to support the second oldest institution in Skelmersdale. I am sincerely hoping for proactive engagement from them to ensure the long-term success of our club, which reflects positively on the entire community.

England may not have brought home the Euros cup this time, but we should still be proud of our football players, manager, support staff, and all they have achieved. Reaching the finals is no mean feat. This success is a testament to the investment and support behind the team, which is crucial for any team, business, or individual to thrive.

Every young person matters, and we are committed to awakening that realisation.
