The buzz around women’s basketball this year has been incredible. The NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament final scored more viewers than the men's final for the first time ever! 🙌 That’s huge! And it’s all thanks to the amazing talent and dedication of players like Caitlin Clark, and coaches like Dawn Staley, who are shaking up the sport and inspiring fans left and right. But, women in sports still face challenges. Despite attracting 18.9 million viewers, the women's final generated substantially less revenue from TV rights compared to the men—$6.5 million versus $873 million, as reported in a recent The Wall Street Journal article. This isn’t just about basketball; it’s about women everywhere having to hustle twice as hard for just a slice of the pie. Sound familiar? The most important question we were asked on today’s panel at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference was about the headwinds we are most concerned about from an industry POV over the next 10 years. It was a lightening round question which I haven’t stopped thinking about. I’m exercising my right to update my answer here as it’s one we all need to be thoughtfully asking ourselves. Hands down my most pressing concern is for our young women and the future of women’s sports in this country. Yes, womens sports is growing at unprecedented rates but at the exact same time girls are dropping out of sport by the age of 13 at a higher rate than they were 50+ years ago BEFORE TitleIX. Social media’s influence, rolling back abortion rights, NIL and changes within the NCAA are only a few of the things that stand to threaten the pipeline of talent and opportunities available for our girls. Less girls wanting to play sports x less opportunities to play will have a direct impact on the number of women rising to senior levels of industry. And THIS, my friends, should matter to all of us, sports fan or not. The urgency is real in my view and something we ALL should be leaning into. Women’s sports isn’t just good for business it’s essential for a thriving society. For the first time in history, the NCAA Women's Final outdrew the men's tournament, 18.9 million to 14.8 million viewers. Once Caitlin Clark moves on to the WNBA it will be interesting to see how much of that viewership increase women's college basketball can maintain. Caitlin Clark's impact on women's college basketball was beyond generational and in fact unprecedented. Notwithstanding, moments like these bode well for women's sports. The more women's sports can attract large "live" viewing audiences, the more we will be conditioned to value women's sports on our way to true gender equality in sports.
