"How far is too far?" A common question by nonprofits interested in influencing elections, legislation, and/or public policy without jeopardizing their tax-exempt status. One (free) resource you should know about is Bolder Advocacy's resource library (a link in the comments). Per its website, BA "promotes active engagement in democratic processes and institutions by giving nonprofits and foundations the confidence to advocate effectively and by protecting their right to do so." You'll find articles like: - The Rules of the Game: A Guide to Election-Related Activities for 501(c)(3) Organizations - Public Charities Can Lobby: Guidelines for 501(c)(3) Public Charities - Lobbying Defined for Private Foundations The lobbying/political activity rules come up in different contexts for different organizations. If you haven't already, take some to understand and discuss internally how these rules might impact your organization.
