St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, in collaboration with Americans for the Arts and Creative Pinellas shared that St. Petersburg’s nonprofit arts industry generated $132,530,557 in economic activity in 2022, according to the newly released Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6), an economic and social impact study. This economic activity is comprised of $61,607,918 in spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and $70,922,639 in event-related spending by their audiences supported 2,121 jobs and generated $26,529,721 in local, state, and federal government revenue. Imagine what we can do with art investors, at every level - government, business and individual philanthropy. All in, all for the greater good.

Here's my observation from the perspective of 30 years of #notforprofit experience: Most #nonprofits do good work. Some do great work. And most struggle to clearly articulate what they do in specific, precise terms because doing so limits their own perception of their work. And the expansive mind and passionate heart struggle to set such limits. It's one reason why decisions take more time to make in nonprofits. And it's why satisficing becomes normalized. Nonprofits - in my strong opinion - have a manifest obligation to be absolutely clear about their CORE FOCUS. They must define their PURPOSE, CAUSE, or PASSION, AND the NICHE in which they pursue this CORE FOCUS. Articulating what change will be brought about by pursuing this Core Focus, over time, becomes the north star that activates donor support.

There are more effective ways for historic preservation advocacy organizations to fund raise. Poor results are often caused by not being able to make an emotional connection with a potential donor. In the past, these organizations could make an appeal based on how people felt about losing a beautiful building. Today, younger generations are more likely to be compelled to act out of an emotional connection with a group of people whose lives will be negatively impacted by the loss of a building or place. The key to making fund raising more effective, in this context, is to seek outside expertise who can credibly understand a potential constituent base. Group think—believing all people value old buildings in the same way—is pervasive in this sector. Social science research shows that professional historic preservationists perceive old places differently than the general public. Continuing to fund raise in the same way without recognizing and acting on these factors will be an increasingly futile efort. But, there is a more effective way forward for those open to change.
