Lack of Infrastructure: While hydrogen infrastructure is still developing, significant progress has been made globally, with refuelling stations becoming more accessible. Initiatives are underway to expand infrastructure to support widespread adoption. 3. Safety Concerns: Hydrogen is as safe as traditional fuels when handled properly. Stringent safety standards and regulations govern hydrogen storage, transportation, and usage, ensuring its safety in vehicles and infrastructure. 4. Cost-Prohibitive: While initial costs may be higher, total cost of ownership for hydrogen vehicles can be competitive, especially as production scales up and technology advances. Great to be back at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo and be part of the workshop and panel on Producing and Delivering Hydrogen Fuel. We shared some of our views on what is needed to lower emissions from commercial transportation, a hard-to-abate energy use sector: 1) We see a mix of low-emission fuels needed - biofuels like renewable diesel, hydrogen and electricity will all have a role. 2) Costs, for battery and hydrogen vehicles and for low-emissions fuels need to be lower in the future for broad adoption - more technology and scale advances are needed 3) Strong incentives are needed to activate the market and long-term, stable, transparent, flexible, market-based policies also needed to encourage investments at scale. 4) This future requires collaborations across the value chain to get it all started - vehicle OEMs, energy and technology providers, and fleets. Diary of a CEO (The Green Warrior) Hydrogen Cars: With sales of electric vehicles increasing fast, do hydrogen fuel cell cars have a future on our roads? Imagine an electric car which has a range of 400 miles, can be refuelled almost as fast as a petrol or diesel car yet emits only water. Those are the upsides of a hydrogen fuel cell car (known as a fuel cell electric vehicle, or FCEV). So why aren’t they everywhere? There is a dedicated core of FCEV supporters who insist that hydrogen-powered EV’s are better than battery-powered EV’s and that the world is crazy for ignoring them. Unfortunately, a hydrogen fuel cell offers few advantages over a battery, with several deal-breaking disadvantages. One of the biggest reasons for the slow uptake of hydrogen vehicles is the existing infrastructure. As of January 2023, there are just 11 places in the UK to fill up your fuel cell car. To make matters worse, the number is going in the wrong direction and is actually a decrease of three stations over the last 12 months, as Shell closed its three sites last year, Running a Hydrogen Car is an Impossibility.  In conclusion, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have promising environmental benefits but face significant challenges related to infrastructure, cost, and efficiency. The success of this technology may depend on advancements in production methods, infrastructure development, and addressing competition from other clean energy alternatives.
