Exciting news for Renewables Developers and Investors! A new support scheme is set to boost investor confidence by unlocking billions in funding for Long Duration Electricity Storage (LDES). This initiative is a significant step towards achieving net zero by 2050, with the National Electricity System Operator estimating a need for 11.5 to 15.3 GW of LDES. LDES technologies, such as pumped storage hydro, liquid air energy storage, compressed air energy storage, and flow batteries, store renewable energy until it’s needed most, ensuring a reliable supply for homes. The OFGEM-designed scheme features a 'cap and floor' model, providing revenue support to developers if their gross annual margin falls below a set ‘floor’ and sharing profits above a certain level with consumers. It includes two application routes: one for mature technologies and another for new innovations. For more details, reach out to Ben Sheppard and Shane Toal from our Infrastructure & Energy team. #RenewableEnergy #LDES #NetZero

The Employment Rights Bill is here! The Labour government's much-anticipated Employment Rights Bill has been published, setting out proposals for the "biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation." Key changes include: - Unfair dismissal rights from day one (with an asterisk) - Tackling zero hours contracts - Heavily restricting fire and re-hire practices - Duty not to permit harassment of employees by third parties (going further than previous laws and the soon-to-be-in-force duty to prevent sexual harassment) Despite the promise of legislation within 100 days of the election (12 October 2024), much of the practical detail will be ironed out in secondary legislation once the Bill enters into force. Apart from rolling back the clock on minimum service levels in respect of industrial action – which will take effect on Parliament passing the Bill – none of the other big changes have a clear start date, with reports suggesting Autumn 2026 is realistic.
