I am preparing for some discussions around child welfare advocacy—and the terms used to express ideals related to reform, transformation and abolishment. When I think of abolishment—-I consistently come back in my mind to the “abolishment of slavery”. And the great abolitionist, like Frederick Douglass & Harriett Tubman. They fought for the end of enslavement of stolen Africans. They fought for the freedom of enslaved Africans. So-in the discourse about the abolishment of the child welfare system—-what exactly are we abolishing? What practices do we want to end? What freedoms do we want people to have? The 13th amendment abolished the “institution of slavery” and yet made way for laws/Black codes that continued to oppress Black people some of which still show up today. What future are we imagining and what are we building in the absence of the legal institution of “child protection”? I appreciate learning perspectives.

🎤 Today, I had the opportunity to give a presentation at a conference in the Lithuanian Parliament. It was an important event and topic in a significant venue. The conference was titled “Perspectives of Interinstitutional Cooperation in the Field of Family Welfare.” I am happy to have contributed to evidence-based family policy development in Lithuania. 🤝 Together with Associate Professors Dr. Lijana Gvaldaitė and Deimantė Rusteikaitė, we presented a research report on interinstitutional cooperation in shaping and implementing family policy in Lithuania. 📑 More information about the research: https://lnkd.in/dyxQG-qV.

Through this program, Mediate BC is developing public legal education and information resources and is providing legal support for Indigenous and racialized families navigating the child welfare system. This includes the creation and distribution of plain language resources in multiple languages, community outreach and workshops, and the expansion of legal advice and support services provided by Collaborative Decision-Making Navigators. Drought relief, clean water,fighting COVID-19 are urgent not SADC. I often worry about how Zimbabweans are so easily excited and lose focus of the big picture. Roads are undoubtedly a key part of economic development. But roads must be part of a comprehensive economic strategy not self-serving regime aggrandizement. Right now drought relief, fighting the fresh outbreak of COVID19, clean portable water to every urban household are the most pressing issues not a shindig to impress visitors. Zimbabweans are unable to hold those in power accountable because of a short attention span. My thoughts 👇🏿

We welcome Services Australia's commitment to supporting millions of Australians to access income support. Three thousand new staff will make a difference to Centrelink wait times. The knock on effect of these wait times and other issues are significant. Welfare Rights Centre continues to serve thousands of people to access income support and resolve unfair debts. However, we cannot keep up with the demand and are forced to turn away many more. To come even close to meeting the demand, we need a significant increase in funding. This will help us to secure enough staff to provide legal advice, information and referrals to clients who are vulnerable and distressed and rely on Community Legal Centres such as ours.
