Executive Director at High Pay Centre | Author 'Enough - Why it's Time to Abolish the Super Rich' (published 20 March 2024)
for anyone with too much excitement in their life, Andrew Speke and I have summarised the five main UK-wide political parties manifesto commitments on issues the High Pay Centre works on like pay and inequality, work and business governance TL:DR - Labour: some pretty major commitments on employment rights with the hefty caveat that they are subject to consultation. Not much on corporate governance - Tories: some quite important policies around shareholder say on pay and corporate reporting have been introduced over the past 14 years, but fair to say this area is no longer a big part of their lives. - Lib Dems: some quite interesting and thoughtful policies on corp gov. Will be interesting to see if the winning party picks this up post-election - Greens: ambitious plans to tax the super-rich more effectively, and again an extensive offering on workers' rights - Reform: issues like economic equality, responsible business and good work don't appear to be huge priorities. Perhaps mistakenly, given that they are making some inroads with younger (often precariously employed) voters that they could potentially build on... https://lnkd.in/etdzZaZN

Honoring the Backbone of Society: A Tribute to Labor On this Labor Day, we pause to recognize and honor the tireless efforts and invaluable contributions of workers around the globe. From the bustling cities to the quiet countryside, it is the collective labor of individuals that propels societies forward, shaping the world we live in today. Labor Day is not just a day off work; it's a day to reflect on the journey of labor movements, the victories won, and the challenges that still lie ahead. It's a day to acknowledge the sweat, tears, and perseverance that have built nations and transformed lives. In every factory, office, hospital, school, and beyond, there are individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and skills to keep the wheels of progress turning. Their labor is the bedrock upon which our economies thrive and our communities flourish. Yet, amidst the celebrations, we must also recognize the pressing issues facing workers worldwide. Income inequality, precarious employment, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions persist in many corners of the globe. Labor Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for fair wages, decent work, and dignity for all. As we mark this day, let us renew our commitment to champion the rights and well-being of workers everywhere. Let us stand in solidarity with those fighting for better working conditions, equitable treatment, and a brighter future. To all the hardworking individuals who labor day in and day out, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your dedication, resilience, and determination inspire us all. Happy Labor Day!

May Day, Worker's Day, May 1st... I have such deep emotions about it. Worker's Day started back in the 1886 when workers protested in Chicago, demanding shorter working hours - 8 hour days. Since then, long story short, the idea is that it's a day for the working class of society to have a day off, and for us to remember the need for equal rights, living wages, and fair labour practices. Today, I see the working class being the ones primarily at work, whilst those with higher-income jobs get the day off. I see long days of work, and add on the 2-3 hours of travel time, rather than 12 minutes in the car. I still see unfair wages and inequality. There's poverty, yes. Yet poverty cannot be an excuse for treating people unfairly, or taking advantage of their need. I remember giving our helper 3 months paid maternity leave. She couldn't believe it. Yet that was what I expected for myself, so why would I not extend the same grace to another. It wasn't easy to do, but doing justice is rarely 'easy'. Let's reflect this worker's day on how we can uplift those who work for us. How we can treat them as equals, because that IS what they are, no matter what your life experience may have told you differently. My bible reading this morning: Amos 5v24, "Let justice flow like a river, righteousness like a never failing stream." I've attached this link - a great explanation of the history for today where you can choose for kids, students or scholars - totally accessible for every age! #justice #creatingbelonging #thrivetogether #diversityequityinclusion #changingperspectives https://lnkd.in/dyFqwUYz

The most easy to understand explanation of comp bands. Thanks Amy Miller for doing the hard work on explaining the complexities in HR and Recruiting!
Sr. Recruiter - I build the teams that build the satellites. Recruiting Truth Teller & Mythbuster. Somehow, LinkedIn Top Voice 2022
Do you want to understand it or do you want to complain about it? Honestly I'm good either way 😂 This is something I've said to my children many times over the years and y'all it goes here too. Recently there was more noise about pay ranges being too big, unfair, stupid, irrelevant, you name it. Sure, that happens. Y'all remember the staffing agency paying 36K-1M? Sure, Jan. 🙄 But what if I told you there IS logic behind some of these big ranges? And that your complaint is with the government for writing stupid laws that make us share information that isn't particularly helpful? If you DO want to understand it please watch this video. If it was helpful, go watch the next one in the series too. What's up with compensation bands? Pt 1 - https://lnkd.in/g34Vwxas What's up with compensation bands?
