Big news! The Economic Mobility Catalog team at Results for America is launching a new blog series! Over the coming months, we will draw upon our research, case studies, and conversations with experts to help local leaders quickly get up to speed on evidence-based approaches to confront their toughest challenges. Policy area by policy area, we will articulate what an evidence-backed "portfolio" of interventions might look like, and how cities and counties can implement those strategies. For our first entry, Cole Ware spells out several approaches that local governments can take to improve job quality for lower-income workers. Give it a read, and let us know what you think! https://lnkd.in/erpE5M2U

Experienced mixed methods researcher eager to undertake rigorous social science inquiry to improve working conditions, strengthen human rights, and promote economic and political democracy.
The failure of the neoliberal era, and its emphasis on market fundamentalism, self-branding, and business management pop-psychology to make work more dignified and fulfilling has forced policymakers and ordinary people to search for alternatives. The concept of worker voice is one such alternative, and this new report from the Department of Labor provides an overview of what it means and how we can bring it to life in our workplaces. There is increasing recognition that workers need strong unions and collective institutions to represent their interests and help shape the conditions of their employment. The unilateral control many employers have over the workplace might continue to be the norm, but it is a norm whose moral foundation has eroded, leading many to see it as nothing more than what philosopher Elizabeth Anderson calls workplace authoritarianism. It is no surprise, then, that at this moment of political democratic backsliding we also find a world whete labor rights are under threat. Political and economic democracy go hand in hand, one reinforcing the other. In essence, that‘a the underlying logic of worker voice. But don’t take my word for it. Long-time academic, historian of labour, management and employment, journal editor - so still working but reluctantly retired! .
On FirstView ths week John Quiggin Full employment and working future. The Economic and Labour Relations Review. Published online 2024:1-12. doi:10.1017/elr.2024.8 In this Contested Terrains article, comparing the 2023 White Paper, Working Future: The Australian Government’s White Paper on Jobs and Opportunities with Curtin Government's 1945 White Paper, Full Employment in Australia, Quiggin explores changing economic and idealistic priorities. He finds that Working Future is "not the radical break with the existing policy framework implied by pre-election rhetoric. However, restoring a meaningful definition of full employment as an objective of government policy is a step in the right direction." For real White Paper tragics - another ELRR article of six years ago (before we invented Contested Terrains!) was Nevile J.
