As we all know, the food industry has been changing and has been affected by an endless number of factors, however, as consumers we have the option to choose what is produced in the Americas using the free trade agreement as a tool to maintain leadership that we have carried since 1917. When the market changes, everything can change as this short news article shows. Not every industry of course can rely on the government to step in and offer support as in this case. Even if they do, I’d suggest that the support might not always equate to the benefits gained by anticipating market changes in advance and taking action. Anticipating the market requires both monitoring and honestly assessing the market. Very often neither of these activities take place. Time is not given to monitoring and in many cases there are barriers created to prevent the honest discussion of anything that might appear to be ‘negative’ or not towing the official line. Of course there are other situations where the market changes unexpectedly in a way that nobody could reasonably have expected. That’s a different story. But for the people involved who care about that company, the first scenario where leaders put their heads in the sand and prohibit essential feedback, well that feels like being in a slow motion devastating car crash. My point? If you are a leader, put proper monitoring systems in place and listen to the people who are close to the market (for example salespeople who speak to customers everyday) and don’t ignore, prevent or punish people for raising issues that are true but difficult to hear. In my recent conversations, a recurring theme has emerged: the resilience and adaptability of leaders in the Australian dairy industry. Despite facing significant headwinds, including unintended consequences from government policies like the dairy code, there’s a silver lining that deserves recognition. I recently spoke about how the Australian government's fair trading protections, while well-intended, have posed challenges for dairy farmers. Yet, in the face of difficulty, we Australians are a nation of tenacious go-getters. Right now, that trait couldn’t be more crucial. It's vital for leaders to not only be resilient but to maintain an optimistic, long-term view for business growth. The dairy industry, with its current hurdles, requires executives who aren't just risk-aware but have a healthy appetite for strategic risk. They need to be visionaries, able to identify and seize new growth opportunities. Take, for example, Maleny Dairies. In the past two years, they’ve embarked on transformative initiatives, pivoting their strategy to adapt to the new market realities. Their recent partnership with PE Foods is a perfect illustration of this adaptive approach. This collaboration is not just about maintaining exceptional customer service; it’s a strategic move to foster growth across Queensland and beyond. PE Foods, known for their professionalism and extensive network, aligns perfectly with Maleny Dairies' values and aspirations. It’s a clear indicator of how positive, well-thought-out collaborations can drive success even in challenging times. We had a fantastic industry engagement roundtable hosted by FoodPlant with the support of Enterprise Singapore and JTC Corporation. This session was a remarkable gathering of passionate leaders from a diverse mix of SMEs and MNCs in the Food Manufacturing and Food Services industries. We delved into key challenges such as manpower constraints, logistics hurdles, and maintaining cost competitiveness. What stood out were the inspiring success stories shared, showcasing how we have collectively overcome some of these challenges. It was a testament to the resilience and innovation within our industry. We also identified numerous opportunities for cross-collaboration, emphasizing the strength of working together to achieve common goals. A heartfelt thank you to all our partners and participants for their invaluable insights and contributions.
