⚠ Spoiler alert – personal post: Management lessons from Dragonboating When recently applying the #IcebergModel in a workshop to surface hidden personal characteristics and deeper roots of behavioral patterns, I realized: What has influenced me significantly, lies well below the surface of the water: years of competitive Dragon boating, first in Hong Kong, later with the Swiss National team. For good reasons this paddle sport - 22 athletes moving together, precisely aligned, sitting shoulder to shoulder in the small space of a canoe - is often used for team building exercises. At the occasion of today’s #InternationalDragonBoatDay my key learnings, that became my guiding principle in managing teams: 👯♂️ Teamwork beats solo-out-performers: consistent strokes applied at the same time, have more impact to speed, than single initiatives. Consequently… 🕓 Adopt your pace : …you can only pace as fast as your slowest paddler. 🤝 Trust is the base : not every team member has the same absolute strength, but it is essential to the motivation of all, to trust that every individual is giving his/her/their personal best. 👀 All eyes in the boat : Don’t get distracted from your own race by what the competitions does. 🎯 Clarity matters : communication in the boat is concise and crystal clear, orders are rehearsed. 🔄 Prepare & visualize : take a moment and visualize the challenge ahead, the noise, the rush, who will be next to you. 🚀 The race is now - don't hold back : saving power for a later race might mean, that this later race will never happen. 🏆 Competing is fun : you race to win, you lose to learn. 👷♀️ Work with the team you have : there is no team B, no secret weapon, believe in the potential you can unlock through preparation and joint effort coming together. These two days in Planica (SLO) with the promising young Nordic skiers were wonderful. In January, we started a path that aims to #involve and #listen more and more the young athletes on sustainability issues. It is a project to make #athletes truly protagonists of #change. The role of FIS in this project is to #inspire and #facilitate their ideas, treating all their ideas with respect, even the strangest - which sometimes is also the winning one. It was nice to see how even those initially less tempted found the #inspiration to participate by making their own contribution. I think this drive is due to the #possibility of putting an #idea into action, giving it shape, making it #tangible. A big #thanks to all the people involved! In this post, I would like to reflect on what can help European and World Championships become as significant as they are in other sports. 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲: Anticipation makes the event more desirable, so why not hold the Championship every 4 years? ⏳ 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧/𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: Having a European Championship at the end of July and a World Championship at the end of October in the same year "normalizes" these events. Most other sports treat them as the most important competitions. 📆 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥: While the level of Padel is growing in Europe, there is still a considerable gap between the big teams and the emerging ones. Many 6/0 results are not good publicity for the appeal of the event. 🎾💪 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐬: Cagliari and Doha deserve public thanks for believing in and investing in Padel. However, it would be great to see new venues and countries involved. Full stands would attract new sponsors and investors! 🌍🏟️ 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Padel captivates on TV because it is a spectacular sport. Adequate coverage is key! 📺⭐ 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠/𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞: It would be wonderful if sports enthusiasts from different countries experienced the European and World Padel Championships with the same enthusiasm as they do for football. I know, it’s a long process, but we have to start somewhere! 🌐⚽ 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: Professionals should help promote these major events. If the example of football is still too distant, the Final Phase of the Davis Cup can be a good reference! 🏅🌍 Any other suggestions to make these events even more attractive? 🤔💡

What is it about the Olympics that has us hyped about the pommel horse or the 100-meter race or synchronized diving? This weekend’s events drew me in and left me inspired. At its core, I think the Olympics highlights the perseverance and resilience of the human spirit. Athletes are constantly pushing their limits, overcoming obstacles, and some will achieve their dreams. Noah Lyles won gold and the title of the world’s fastest man based on a lead of five-thousandths of a second. That blows my mind. Every edge, no matter how small, matters. There’s also the universal passion that Olympic athletes have for their sport. Every single one of them has a story of sacrifice, hard work, and triumph in doing what they love. The Olympics bring the world together and highlight diversity and unity simultaneously.
