It's not uncommon for some zoos or safari parks to start to hire cheaper unskilled labour to take on the roles of keepers or guides in an attempt to save a few dollars. The decision to do this is usually done by an inexperienced and unskilled management team that foolishly think that basically anyone can care for the collection or show guests around answering questions. The individuals that are making these decisions often have never done any work out in the grounds, so they really have no real understanding of what really goes into the daily running of your park. The same often goes for positions in management where a zoo or safari park will bring in a lightweight Director or Operations manager with very little experience because they are cheaper. While it's a fact of life that all zoos and safari parks are always looking for ways to improve revenue and cut down on costs it should never be done at the expense of quality of leadership or service to our guests or even worse, for the care of the collection. Trying to cut corners by bringing in cheap unskilled labour not only shows little respect for the professional staff that have dedicated years of study and work into our industry, but will also hurt your parks reputation eventually. Qualified and experienced staff are the back bone of any successful zoo or safari park and should know their worth, so the question should be asked, Why risk the welfare of the collection and the value of good customer service by asking your team to accept lower paid staff to do their job or to lead the team? Highlands Recruit to Karkar Island Plantations Pg 125- 128 – Extracted from Sir. John Middletons book - My Life on Karkar. Our first Highlands recruits came down in 1950, mainly from the Chimbu. They were pretty scrawny when they came down, they were sweet-potatoe eaters and had pot bellies. At first, they didn’t like rice, they said it didn’t fill up their bellies, but after a while they got used to it, and put on weight. They were pretty strong men, too, but they were very volatile and temperamental, very difficult to handle at first, because they had little contact with Europeans, and very few could even speak Pidgin – If you got one Pidgin speaker amongst the fitty recruits, you were lucky. They were easy to upset, and when they did, things could get very interesting. They were willing enough, but they had a complete lack of knowledge of what the job required, they had never even seen a coconut tree or salt water. The first lot we got were on twelve-month contacts, and the first three months were basically just training period, where they learned how to cut copra, cut grass with a sarif (grass knife), and all the other jobs that they have to be done on plantation. As time went by, we started to get Highlanders who were coming back on their second or third contracts. They knew a lot more about the job, and were a lot easier to handle, so we decided we’d try some of them as house staff. Some of the results were a bit odd!!
