Ann Atkinson Schnuerer and I are honored to serve on the Board of Directors for JDRF Tennessee. JDRF International's mission is to improve lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications, a cause that we are personally passionate about as Ann has lived with T1D for 20+ years.   Since JDRF's inception in 1970, JDRF has been able to increase longevity of type one diabetics by 25 years.   The average out of pocket lifetime cost for a type 1 diabetic is $169,000 (and growing). It is estimated that 12% of the workforce is impacted directly by T1D.   Progress to a cure is accelerating quickly – we are on track to have 8-10 new cell therapies in Phase 2 clinical trials before 2028.   JDRF is dedicated to our mission, and we continually search and use multiple funding sources to ensure its completion. We raise funds from foundations, corporations, individual donations, major gifts, and special events to attain our goals. The JDRF Promise Gala has served as an iconic event in our community for over two decades, bringing together influential individuals, philanthropists, and business leaders for an evening of celebration and generosity. My wife Kim and I are honored, and humbled, to announce that we will be receiving the “Breath of Life” award at the annual Uncork the Cure Gala to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on November 8th at the Fairmont Copley in Boston. https://lnkd.in/esysjTXc Twenty-five years ago, two weeks after our youngest child Ross was born, we found out that both Ross and our oldest child Justin had Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Our daughter Michaela did not. It was devastating and heartbreaking news - the median life expectancy when our boys were diagnosed was mid-20s. CF is a genetic, rare/orphan disease – “orphan” diseases have fewer than 200,000 patients in the US; there are only 30,000 CF patients in the US. Pharmaceutical companies don’t typically invest in drug development for orphan diseases because it’s so difficult to recoup the development costs for such a small number of patients. The CF foundation developed a strategy (dubbed venture philanthropy) to invest money, raised via charitable activities, directly into promising research. If a drug that the CF foundation invested in receives FDA approval, the CF foundation receives a royalty - those royalties are then reinvested in new drug research. Kim and I, and our families, have participated in and led a variety of fundraising activities over the past 25 years – walks, wine testing events, golf outings, holiday gift boutiques, movie premiers, sporting events, and many others. We along with our daughter, Michaela, have advocated on Capitol Hill at the state and federal level. In 2015 a drug was FDA approved to treat CF, followed by a much-improved version in 2019 which treats the underlying cause of CF. It has been a life changing event for Justin and Ross, and 75% of CF patients are able to benefit from this drug, raising their life expectancy to the mid-60s. Yet the remaining 25% of CF patients still face a much shorter life expectancy. While we’ve made tremendous progress, we still have a long way to go to give every CF patient a chance to live a life free of this chronic disease. In addition to new drug development, there is now research on gene editing which we hope will lead to cure. This month, I’m not only celebrating Celiac Awareness Month, but Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month as well. While I do not suffer from CF, I nonetheless have a personal connection to it.  One of my daughters’ friends tragically passed away from the condition in her 20s. Whereas dying at such a young age used to be an inevitability, today, babies with CF are predicted to have a median life expectancy of 65 years. This feat was in large part made possible because of CF Foundation President/CEO (and Beyond Celiac board member emeritus!) Bob Beall’s decision to pursue a venture philanthropy model, harnessing the support of donors to bring life-changing pharmaceuticals to market. Dr. Beall’s and CF's success in this endeavor has served as a blueprint for our own venture philanthropy fund, Beyond Celiac Investments. We need more shots on goal!
