Advancements happen at the intersections. The intersections of biology and math but also research and business. The U.S. is a leader in innovation but faces significant--but not insurmountable--challenges in translating scientific breakthroughs to patients who need them. Public/Private partnerships such as the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health are essential in this endeavor. I can't think of a more effective leader and contributor than Nina Kjellson. She is a consummate VC with a keen mind for business and, most importantly, a huge heart. What a wonderful addition to such a respected and committed Board. #innovationecosystem #healthcareforall

In the wake of International Women’s Day, I spent a thoroughly enjoyable, thought-provoking day yesterday at the BioIndustry Association (BIA) Women in Biotech conference.    The energy and enthusiasm from Michelle Griffith Robinson OLY set the tone for the day. Find your tribe so you can thrive. “No” means next opportunity (one to use at work and home; particularly when my toddler has said “no” for the 100th time before it’s even 8am!).   Lucy Edwardes Jones chaired a brilliant investment session, with an all-female panel, notwithstanding the terrifying fact that there are more VC funds run by someone called David than by women.   A number of helpful practical tips shared: - Your pitch deck should be clear about the value proposition for investors; - Listen to the questions you are being asked by investors and learn from them (including using them to adjust and focus your next pitch); - Don’t be afraid to ask your network for introductions – completely agree with Emily Pilkington that it is genuinely exciting to be asked a question about something other than the day job!   For the second session on redefining sector leadership, there were three words I took away – Bravery. Vulnerability. Transparency.   With thanks to Rippon Ubhi for the reminder to strive for excellence and not to let perfectionism hold you back.   #WomeninBiotech
