🚀 A Day in the Field with ProPetro! 🌟 Today, I had the amazing opportunity to visit ProPetro’s hydraulic fracturing sites in New Mexico. We explored both conventional and electric frac operations, getting a deep dive into the processes and equipment. 🔍 Key Learnings: • Witnessing the heart of ProPetro’s operations and the critical role of hydraulic fracturing. • Understanding the importance of data in the field and how it’s generated. • Engaging with field personnel and discovering the latest innovations in frac technology. 💡 As a Data Engineer Intern, connecting data to its source is crucial. Yesterday was an impactful day for the NEXT generation of energy professionals. We started with our Emerging Energy Professionals workshop, where interns and seasoned professionals received a career boost. Attendees learned about networking (both online and in person), personal branding, effective communication, and crafting and delivering a personal elevator pitch. (Workshops in Midland - 7.15, Denver - 7.29, and OKC 7.31) Following the workshop, we hosted a Crüe Club E&P/Intern Connection Mixer with the goal of providing mentorship and career advice to soon-to-be-grads. Although the turnout wasn't as expected with current E&P professionals, we had great conversations and meaningful interactions. Afterward, Chris Carpenter and I took the group to a proper oilfield dinner, where we discussed what universities need from E&P Operators and OFS companies, the challenges they face in job hunting, and connecting with individuals and companies in the industry. The insights gained were invaluable, and we'll be using them to continue building the bridge between the next generation and current industry professionals. A big thank you to Cody Rodriguez (Iron Orchard Operating, LLC), Jon Giesbrecht (ProFrac Services) for attending and sharing your insights and perspectives, and to Chris Carpenter with LFS Chemistry for sponsoring the event and being so active in the Crue Club community. I cannot believe it is that time of year again already! As the coordinator of Lycopodium's Summer Vacation Program, I am so excited to run this experience for a third time and assist in providing a meaningful 12 weeks for all of our students. Once the cohort is confirmed, my primary role is to organise the opportunity for each student to contribute to a real-world project with the assistance of a dedicated mentor. August is Water Quality Month! Last month our intern, Alex, and co-op participant, Nick, went to the Pennichuck Brook and Merrimack River watershed where they collected water samples. Once they had all the samples, they went back to Pennichuck’s lab to test the water for various contaminants and probe readings to collect data on the water’s pH level, dissolved oxygen, and measure the flows at each of our 18 tributary sites. Our objective in collecting these samples is to be able to monitor the water quality in the pond and its tributaries. Tracking the water quality parameters allows Pennichuck to get a better understanding of the fluctuations of the water as a result of seasonal weather and climate changes. I am grateful and proud of how much I have grown professionally and personally, as I reflect on my time working on biosurfactant-metal complexation studies for bioionflotation applications. What started as a 5-week internship turned into a transformative learning experience that was extended from August to October—and now, I am incredibly honored to receive a recommendation letter for my contributions! A special thank you to Mital Jadhav-Chakankar, Suvarna Ajay Patil, and Martin Rudolph for their unwavering guidance, support, and trust in my abilities. Your mentorship pushed me to exceed my own expectations and dive deeper into bioionflotation tests. Most of my internship was based at the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF) at HZDR, but I also had the chance to work at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). It was enriching to gain different perspectives within these institutes, experiencing both the innovative research approaches and the collaborative environment. Personally, this journey has taught me the value of working independently. Managing my own experiments and ensuring that every analysis was conducted with accuracy required a deep sense of responsibility. I learned to view my results with critically, always striving for precision and understanding the implications of each step. This has been invaluable in developing my confidence as a researcher and refining my problem-solving skills. The work we are doing in bioionflotation has the potential to make a significant impact in recovering rare earth elements (REEs), which are crucial for industries like electronics and magnet production. As REEs become increasingly scarce, developing sustainable methods to recover them from industrial wastewater is more important than ever. This project is not just an academic exercise—it addresses critical challenges in resource sustainability, and I am proud to have been a part of it. I am excited to carry these skills and insights into future challenges. PS: My hair was tied back in two ponytails! Ken had an interesting take. His customers work so hard to bring you clean, safe, drinkable water for about $2/day (avg utility bill), so the waste and expense that come with bottled water is just unnecessary. * On-demand talent for energy and water industry: It's an aging workforce, and younger talent comes with higher turnover, and in our country and globally, water infrastructure is aging. Therefore, companies like Badger Meter are always always on the hunt for talent, especially engineers, and has a super strong internship program to cultivate talent. * It would take $1 trillion to fully modernize the water infrastructure in the US. Wow. This means acquisitions and advancements in water quality are key for Badger Meter. 100% worth a snowy drive in, thanks to Mike Kornemann, Carrie Planert and team for your work on these great events.
