#ThrowbackThursday to last week when our very own Scott Larson, Chief Engineering Officer, was a speaker on the Catheter Development & Manufacturing panel at the well-attended MPP MN, organized and promoted by Steve Maxson. The glimpse of industry knowledge and catheter expertise that Scott shared at the event was just the tip of the iceberg. We are privileged to have him as part of our team. Learn more about what he and the rest of the R&D team have been up to at VitalPath to push the boundaries and speed time to market for our vital customers since he joined us last fall at the link below. 👨🔬 Click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gUuG8hda #MPPMN #catheterdevelopment #medicaldevice

Today we’re chatting about another life changing medical device design by HaA: the Extracorporeal Bypass Cannula. We worked on updating the Extracorporeal Bypass Cannula from its original design, which was a single-use, venovenous cannula with a nitinol basket, reinforced, self-expandable funnel shaped distal tip used during extracorporeal bypass for the removal of undesirable intravascular material. ▪️ The problem: The original Extracorporeal Bypass Cannula device was like a “slinky” and hindered additional navigation to the pulmonary artery. ▪️ The goal: To allow for better use of the device and better navigation to both pulmonary arteries. ▪️ Our process: The HaA team used simulated vasculature models and animal labs to iterate the cannula’s design until it could consistently and easily navigate to both pulmonary arteries. The team also used dual durometer shafts to allow for stability during insertion and flexibility for tight navigational turns. A defect. Potential for the Catheter Disconnection from the Patient Line Stopcock Connectors. A design or manufacturing error? Proper design validation should prevent such a failure mode. But this defect could be an assembly error or a component problem. In any case the root cause of the failure mode must be determined by Medtronic.
