"Being a generalist is not about not being a specialist" - Anna Kaplun, Senior Operations Strategist, Seeds In today’s rapidly changing job market, where roles and industries constantly evolve, generalists—those who can adapt and tackle problems from a broad perspective—are becoming increasingly valuable. However, the traditional emphasis on specialization can be confusing, especially for those just starting their careers. At Virtual Internships, our interns are often placed with startups and growing businesses, where they gain exposure to various roles and responsibilities. If they get caught up in the old mindset of specialization, they might feel lost, not realizing that their broad knowledge is a valuable asset. That’s why our Head of Employability, Mirta Aguirre (M.A.Education), sat down with Anna to discuss the advantages of being a generalist. These sessions provide interns with valuable insights, helping them explore their options, recognize their strengths, and confidently choose the path that fits them best. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐌𝐄𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 Having worked in three startups and one SME across different continents, I can totally relate to the challenges highlighted in this report! Oftentimes, there’s a clear need for interns, but the complexity of reaching out to universities, especially with limited time and resources, can make the process daunting. CEO Agile Rainmakers | Business Development Consulting | Author of Intern Management and How To Intern Successfully
Preparation. It isn't one of the principles of an exceptional internship because it is so fundamental to any internship. To include it as a principle in Intern Management: Principles for Designing an Exceptional Internship, we would also have to include drink water, eat food and sleep. Today is March 11th and many companies have interns starting in 10 weeks. Surprisingly, some aren't prepared for their interns. Over the weekend, an MBA shared with me that her firm is utterly unprepared for their interns - having no idea what projects to assign or even where the interns will sit. Worse, this is nothing new! So, why not take an hour today and prepare for your interns? That time will make a tremendous difference since you have so much lead time. To all those companies that understand this and already prepare, thank you so much! You are making a world of difference for this next generation of leaders. For those that don't, please raise your awareness and purchase Intern Management for yourself and How To Intern Successfully for your interns. It will be the best investment you make in your internship program and it will lead to innovation throughout your organization. Thank you. #internship #management #innovation

💡 How did I turn $6.2K into an 8-figure business? I focused on building strong relationships with universities to bring in interns. This saved me a lot of money while creating a steady pipeline of talented, motivated individuals. Many of them ended up joining full-time. Key challenges I faced: Finding the right talent – Ensuring interns were a good fit. Training efficiently – Onboarding without overburdening the team. Retaining top performers – Keeping them engaged for long-term roles. By partnering with universities, I scaled up without the usual hiring costs. Takeaway: Leveraging internships can be a game-changer for growing your business. #entrepreneurship #businessgrowth #internships #scalingup #leadership

Global People Operations | HR & Talent Strategy | Program Management | Organizational Coaching & Consulting
As a business leader, your competitive edge may be closer than you think - it's your interns and junior talent. Too often, these bright and talented individuals are relegated to mundane tasks and viewed as temporary or less capable help. But this shortsighted approach isn't just costing you - it's a massive missed opportunity. Recognizing the untapped potential of interns, I founded a global internship program in 2019. This initial idea has evolved and become increasingly successful, providing the organization with a significant competitive advantage. Many of these interns have gone on to become exceptional full-time employees. They were given a platform to make a real impact, and they repaid that investment with their hard work, innovative thinking, and long-term commitment. Interns and junior professionals bring fresh ideas, boundless energy, and a strong desire to contribute. With the right investment in their training and development, they quickly transform into valuable assets, driving creativity and innovation within the organization. NACE's annual survey of internship employers has consistently found that 50% to 60% of eligible interns convert to full-time employees, highlighting the significant potential of investing in young talent. Forget the outdated perception of interns and junior staff as less capable. These individuals are quick learners, tech-savvy, and brimming with unrealized potential. Even if they don't stay long-term, they can refer business, rejoin in the future, and leverage their vibrant networks to create lasting value. 💡 Bottom line: Invest in the development of junior talent, and you unlock a significant competitive advantage at your organization. ➡ The real question is: How are you leveraging your young talent to drive growth and innovation? #Interns #Internships #TalentAcquisition #FutureOfWork #JuniorTalent #TalentDevelopment #CareerGrowth

🚀 Entering the Corporate World in Your Third Year: A Good or Bad Move? 🚀 As a third-year college student who recently ventured into the corporate world, I've encountered a common debate: Is starting your corporate journey in your third year beneficial or premature? Here’s why I believe it’s a strategic move: 🔹 Valuable Experience: My recent internships have provided me with early exposure to real-world business environments. This hands-on experience has been invaluable in applying theoretical knowledge and understanding industry dynamics. 🔹 Competitive Edge: By starting early, I’ve been able to build a professional network and gain practical skills that give me a competitive advantage. This early start has helped me clarify my career path and align my academic goals with industry expectations. 🔹 Personal Growth: Navigating the corporate world while still in college has significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. It has enhanced my understanding of workplace expectations and improved my ability to handle complex business challenges. While some may argue for focusing solely on academics, I’ve found that balancing academic responsibilities with practical experience has been incredibly rewarding. The benefits of early corporate exposure, such as gaining confidence and real-world insights, are substantial. What are your thoughts on starting internships or entering the corporate world during your college years? Have you had similar experiences or insights? #CareerDevelopment #Internships #CollegeToCorporate #ProfessionalGrowth #CareerStrategy

Well, it has been two months since launching our new membership service for social impact organizations called the INTERNSHIP INSIDER™ Membership 🙌 We help our Internship Insiders set up and run right-fit internship programs in a time and cost-effective way 💰 We wanted to reflect and share a little about Visions Internships' journey to get here, in hopes it will encourage you to keep going, press forward, and stay nimble on the path to fulfilling your dreams. Our idea for a virtual Do-It-With-You membership model emerged after 2+ years running a mostly Do-It-For-You program where we would find, train, manage, and mentor interns to get projects done for real clients-- but later realized our clients were left without their own internship infrastructure, and we were left unable to scale beyond serving a small group of organizations and interns. Sooo... as social entrepreneurs do, our founder Amy Mosher Berry went back to the drawing board to design a more sustainable solution that would serve many more organizations and young people and, by extension, create a brighter world for us all! We will share more about our amazing founding members in the weeks to come. In the meantime, we'd love to hear what you're working on and any insights you've had along the way. Humbled & Grateful~ Visions Internships . . . . #InternshipInsider #MembershipProgram #SocialImpact #InternshipPrograms #SocialEntrepreneurship #OrganizationalDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment #ImpactfulInternships #EntrepreneurialJourney #CommunityBuilding
