Proving that change can happen in the moments you least expect it, Nilson went from being a jack-of-all trades in the mechanical and production industry to becoming a learning and development (L&D) trainer at VGW. Born and raised in Brazil, Nilson gained extensive experience in the manufacturing industry before moving to Canada. It was during this time in Canada, while honing his skills in manufacturing, that he discovered his passion for teaching through a transformative volunteering experience. This newfound love for education inspired him to gain industry exposure, with the goal of entering the field professionally. "My journey at VGW began in January 2021," Nilson says. "In March 2023, I transitioned into L&D as a trainer, designing and delivering dynamic training programs." Today, he continues to passionately design and deliver training programs for new hires and team members, focusing on enhancing communication and fostering collaboration to meet VGW’s objectives. Nilson says what he loves most about being a trainer are the growth opportunities and how gratifying the job is. "Among the things that keep me moving are growth and business impact. Having the opportunity to grow, personally and professionally, and being capable of impacting the business positively fuels my day-to-day," he says. He says his best advice as an L&D trainer is to “be humble enough to share your knowledge, learn from your trainees, own your mistakes, and ask for help. Value constructive feedback, and most importantly, reflect and act on it." Explore #lifeatvgw → vgw.co/careers/

6 months since stepping into the training world, so hows it going? Well I have achieved: Level 3 in Teaching qualification Passed off to deliver SMTH Initial I have met some fantastic people already both internal and external who all share the same passion for teaching / training and helping others achieve new skills. Its such a nice warm welcoming feeling to be around and the quality of training that I have witnessed both Safety Critical and S&T wise has been second to none. I spent quite a bit of time at RT Training Solutions prior to the new year in which was gratefully received, to help me become an SMTH Initial trainer. I cant praise them enough for allowing me to do train a trainer with one of their trainers at their 1st class facilities Almost like everyone I had my nerves when the day finally came that I would be stepping in to the realms of now learning to become a trainer was going to be like. Questions running through my mind like am I doing the right thing? What if I fall apart in front of people, or have a moment where my mind just goes blank and forget where I am with the course, have I met the training objectives and delivered everything that I need to. But thankfully non of these have yet to happen and I know there is no guarantee that they wont, but one thing I am sure of is that I have 100000% made the right move at the right time in my opinion. Since joining the training world my levels of stress have decreased significantly, I finally have my weekends to myself and can do things when I want, without worrying about work on a Saturday night. Quality of life just feels so much better and my phone isn't ringing 24/7. Working for City & Guilds / Intertrain (UK) Ltd is unbelievable. I know I am only 6 months in, but honestly if I knew how much better life would have been, I would have done this years ago. So here's to continuing the next chapter of my life. On-wards and up-wards.

"So, how did you get into training?" In all honesty? I fell into it. My GM thought I was great at my job and great with people, so she asked me to train our new starters. I said yes... and the journey began 😁 Like so many others in hospitality, it wasn't until I'd been training for about 2 years that someone actually showed me HOW to do it. You should have seen me at the end of my first 'Train the Trainer', my head nearly fell off. THERE WAS SO MUCH I NEVER KNEW. I knew there were different learning styles and needs... I just didn't know what they were or how to accommodate them. I knew people learn at different paces... I didn't know how to manage that when working in a fast-paced venue. I didn't know how to course-correct when my approach wasn't working. I knew that following a training plan was important... but when a walk-in of 30 people would rock up, I didn't know how to adapt the plan in a way that didn't harm my trainee's learning. There was so much guesswork. Hit and miss. Trial and error. ❌ Not good for me, not good for my trainee, not good for the guest. Over the years, with more experience, more learning, more coaching and more delivery, I grew to be a fantastic trainer (that's not the sound of my trumpet being blown, I swear). But I do often think about how much better off my training and my trainee's would've been in those early years if somebody had showed me how. If this sounds familiar, or you recognise this in your team and you want to remove the guesswork & equip your trainers with the tools, knowledge & confidence they need, then send them our way... I so often I hear that training is rubbish, training is money making, training isn't worth bothering with. Well I totally disagree, training gives direction, improved knowledge, improved confidence, confirmation that we are correct in our knowledge, team building experience and helps makes us feel valued in our role. If you have a decent trainer, that is passionate and will to go above and beyond for their delegates you will 100% always get something out of a course. We are that company, me and my trainers are passionate and will give you a return on your investment. Don't settle for anything less. #training #dcpc #drivertraining #drivercpc #driversafety #firstaid #firstaidtraining

As a high school senior studying psychology and economics, I’m always eager to learn about effective leadership and management techniques. This HBR article really resonated with me, highlighting the difference between simply delegating tasks and truly teaching others. By focusing on teaching rather than just delegating, leaders can empower their teams, foster growth, and build stronger, more resilient organizations. It's a reminder that great leadership is about investing in people and their development. Looking forward to applying these insights in my academic journey and beyond! Check out the article below. #Leadership #Learning #Psychology #Economics #GrowthMindset

As I have spent most of my career in teaching I naturally have this trainer mindset. I totally resonate with the following lines " You will have to teach them not only how to do the task but also why the task has to be done that way" Even when the office boy does the simple task of scanning the property documents I have taught him to look for the document number, check the no of pages, look for missing pages, how to save them in proper folder, how to name the folder and how to give file names. I have emphasized why it is important to check the document number & page numbers. What are the consequences when we miss them. How can we save time and other delays when we do it rightly. How giving proper names to your file and folder saves your search time. I will also encourage him when he has done it correctly. I have appreciated when he has given relevant names to the files. When some mistakes happen I will also point it out and also explain the consequences of the mistakes. Initially it took time for me to train but the work quality has improved and mistakes have reduced a lot. Only when you teach them why they can come up with their own innovative ways of doing the task efficiently. If you teach only how they will be only procedure driven and their common sense will not work. When there are some exceptions they will not think and respond to it instead they will stick to the old ways of doing only.
If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted. Make training a regular part of your job so you know who you can trust with certain tasks.

Excellent article with very practical advice. The title doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s more about the mentality of the supervisor than the act of delegation. In other words don’t just stop delegating. Rather, think of delegation in terms of providing training and development .opportunities. Here is a key excerpt, though you could pick out several: When you take on the mindset of a trainer — instead of a manager delegating work — you will naturally look for ways to give a little more responsibility to the people who work for you.
If you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted. Make training a regular part of your job so you know who you can trust with certain tasks.
