❗📰 Paper Alert: An optimization approach for a milling dynamics simulation based on #QuantumComputing ❗ 👥 When creating a complete #DigitalTwin of a complex aerospace component, such as integral compressor rotors (#Blisk), complex and computationally intensive simulation models are used, which makes it very difficult to use in industrial practice. 👨💻 Within the #QUASIM research project, our colleagues Stefan Schröder and Pascal Kienast together with our consortium partners are working on accelerating production simulations with various algorithms and technologies of computationally efficient quantum computing (#QC). Their goal is to remove the barriers to industrial application so that companies can start using them as soon as high-performance QC hardware becomes available. 🔝 We are happy to share the first results of the QUASIM project with our partners Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI). 🔥 New Study on Shape Memory Alloys 🔬 I'm thrilled to announce the publication of my latest paper "Development of an Automated Experimental System for Thermomechanical and Electrical Characterization of NiTi Shape Memory Alloys" in the prestigious journal Experimental Mechanics! In this work, we developed an innovative automated experimental system enabling simultaneous characterization of the thermomechanical behavior and electrical resistivity evolution of NiTi shape memory alloys under controlled stress conditions. Key Highlights: ✅ Automated system for accurate, reliable measurement of coupled SMA properties ✅ Extensive datasets revealing stress-dependencies in transformation temperatures, recoverable strain, and resistivity ✅ 3D model describing the relationship between resistivity, temperature, and applied stress This automated framework establishes a new foundation for reliable acquisition of coupled SMA property data for accurate design of shape memory actuators and sensors for applications in aerospace, robotics, biomedical engineering, and beyond. Witness the fascinating smoke flow visualization over a free-to-roll delta wing model mounted in a subsonic wind tunnel at the Aerodynamics lab (Mechanical Cluster), UPES under the guidance of Dr. Dhiraj. The experimental setup was designed and developed by third-year Aerospace Engineering students as a part of their project, which was financially supported through the SHODH grant provided by the university for undergraduate research. The primary objective of this student project is to investigate the wing rock phenomenon of delta wings and develop a mechanism to mitigate it, thereby enhancing wing stability. At a critical wind speed, the delta wing model exhibits a flow-induced limit cycle roll oscillation, commonly referred to as the wing rock phenomenon. This phenomenon typically occurs in very slender delta wings (with high sweep angles) at high angles of attack (α ≥ 25°). The counter-rotating wing tip vortices, prominently featured in the video, are pivotal in inducing instability in the wing, and by manipulating these vortices, the oscillations of the wing can be controlled. Exploring Automotive Muffler Simulation with FEniCSx! We've applied FEniCSx for an acoustic simulation of a muffler, setting a specific volume velocity at the inlet. An interesting application could be to compute the muffler's transfer function, for instance. The simulation covers a broad frequency range, but here's a snapshot at one frequency. A PML surrounds the outlet, mimicking the free field propagation. This showcases the power of open-source software for complex simulations, that gives the same results of commercial tools.
