Equipment involved in Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) should be prepared to operate in supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) conditions. This state occurs when the CO2 is above its critical point of 31°C and 73 bar, where it possesses fluid-like density but gas-like diffusivity properties. CO2 presents unique challenges for elastomer seals. It can induce significant swell and can be very aggressive at elevated pressure and temperature, leading to over-compression, extrusion, and ultimately to substantial loss in the sealing performance of an elastomer. We tested the resistance of our Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer parts to sCO2 using our best compounds in terms of RGD and adhering to ISO 23936-2 acceptance criteria: • Kalrez® OG193 and Kalrez® 0090 O-rings were soaked for two weeks in pure sCO2. • Hardness and tensile properties were measured before and after sCO2 exposure. Results: both compounds easily passed the aging test with no significant property loss.
