Disasters affect people. Responses should be tailored to fit their needs. But after a disaster, the most vulnerable individuals, children, families, and communities often have increased challenges on their road to recover. The Administration for Children and Families, or ACF, supports vulnerable children, individuals, and families through its diverse human services programs and grants. That’s why ACF believes human services are essential for supporting people before, during, and after a disaster. In our 2nd post, we’re introducing you to Disaster Human Services. It’s the bridge between emergency management and human services programs, and a key mission of the Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response (OHSEPR). 💥News from FEMA Today💥 FEMA has announced that it is reforming its disaster assistance program to help survivors recover faster. 👏 We are excited that FEMA is making positive program changes to benefit disaster survivors! 🔗 Learn more at https://lnkd.in/eCB7Q7nF In summary, FEMA states that it will be: 1️⃣ Establishing new benefits that provide flexible funding directly to survivors when they need it most.  2️⃣ Cutting red tape and expanding eligibility to reach more people and help them recover faster, while building back stronger.  3️⃣ Simplifying the application process to meet survivors’ individual needs and meeting people where they are. 📆 FEMA expects the changes to be effective for disasters declared on or after 3/22/2024.

Does your family have an emergency plan? What would you do if there was a fire, a tornado, or another emergency situation? This past week has been one of those situations here in Middle Tennessee as we have dealt with frigid temps and travel difficulties. If you fail to prepare, you are at the mercy of the incident you experience. Some basic things every family should have in an emergency plan include emergency kits for each family member (go bags) and plans for what to do in the event of a fire or natural disaster. First, figure out the best evacuation route and where your family will meet outside in case you get separated. Also, figure out the safest place in your home for shelter in place situations. Did you hear Dr Millie Rooney last week, talking about our Care through Disaster project with the ABC Radio Tasmania Mornings program? “We tend to frame responses to disaster, particularly when we’re talking about things like evacuation centres, as very individual. You know, have you got your kit ready, are you prepared? I would like to see us shift to a more collective response", Millie said. “So, for example, I would really like to see a push for governments to think about a four day work week, or a universal basic income. Now that might sound like a bit a disconnect from disaster, but again, what this research shows is if we are going to accomodate individual needs, we actually need the capacity before disaster strikes to be able to build those commune networks. “To join the SES, to join the fire brigade, to get a chainsaw license, so that we can care for each other as a community. Communities do a huge amount of that care work, but we need resourcing and funding and support from government at all levels.” How would you like to see governments support communities to better care for each other?
