Although I was disappointed that Joey Chestnut was not allowed to compete in the 2024 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest after signing a sponsorship deal with Impossible Foods, I thought it was fantastic that he took part in an exhibition eating contest at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. Joey Chestnut ate 57 hot dogs in just five minutes, besting the four servicemen he competed against, who ate a combined 49 hot dogs. Most importantly, Joey Chestnut helped to raise lots of money for military families, as Impossible Foods’ CEO Peter McGuinness presented Operation Homefront with a check for $106,000 as a sponsor of this event.
Based on eating 57 hot dogs in 5 minutes, it is highly likely that, had he been allowed to compete, Joey Chestnut would have retained his mustard belt as the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion, given that the actual winner, Pat Bertoletti, won the men's division by eating 58 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, just one more hot dog than Joey Chestnut ate in half the time.
However, this is not the end to this Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest saga. Impossible Foods and Joey Chestnut may yet have the last laugh as, on Labor Day 2024, Joey Chestnut, the 16-time hot dog eating champion, will compete against Takeru Kobayashi, a 6-time hot dog eating champion and inventor of the Kobayashi shake. The event will be shown on Netflix and will determine who is the greatest hot dog eating champion of all time in a match titled, “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef”.
It will be interesting to see if Impossible Foods is able to capitalize on this positive press going forward and whether we might see an Impossible Foods hot dog eating contest using its vegan hot dogs in the near future.

5moHot Dog Season is here! My favorite hot dog 🌭 recipe is for a Sonoran Dog. 🥓 Bacon wrapped dog, mayo, pinto beans, grilled onion, chopped tomatoes 🍅, guacamole 🥑 mustard, ketchup, more mayo, cojita cheese served in a bolillo roll. Serve with a cold Michelada and a grilled jalapeño. Sounds like a lot! But the combo is 🔥🔥 #FryingpanBacon #WomanOwned #CraveWorthy #HotDog Anna B.
