Regional anesthesia techniques are becoming increasingly popular in veterinary medicine. This is because they offer localized pain relief while potentially reducing the need for systemic opioid analgesics during the perioperative period. One such technique is the GIN-TONIC block, a combination of the greater ischiatic notch plane block and the caudal lateral quadratus lumborum block, which was recently investigated for its analgesic and motor effects in dogs undergoing pelvic limb surgery. #veterinarycare #veterinary #integrativeveterinarymedicine #veterinarymedicine #veterinarystudy #veterinarysurgery #caninehealth #canineveterinarycare

Did you know that Sarasota Veterinary Services offers Laparoscopic spay & gastropexy along with many other minimally invasive procedures. Gastropexy is the surgical attachment of a dog’s stomach to inside their body wall. This is to prevent gastric dilatation volvulus, also known as gastric dilation, twisted stomach, or gastric torsion. It is a medical condition that affects dogs in which the stomach becomes overstretched and rotates cutting off blood supply to the stomach. It can also be referred to as “bloat”, common in large breed and deep chested breed dogs. If not treated it can lead to death. Many dog owners choose to have a preventative procedure called gastropexy performed to prevent the torsion. A gastropexy surgery traditionally involved a long incision along the dog’s abdomen. At Sarasota Veterinary Services we perform this procedure laparoscopically through just a few small incisions the size of a straw. A camera and tiny instruments are inserted to visualize the anatomy and perform the procedure. This technique provides the doctor superior visualization of the anatomy. It provides less blood loss and postoperative pain. Patients return to normal activity significantly faster. We frequently perform this at the time of a spay or neuter. Please contact 941-216-7886 to schedule an appointment with one of our veterinarians to discuss this minimally invasive procedure. https://lnkd.in/dDFAgesD Les Meadowcroft #VeterinarySurgery #VetSurgeon #VetSurgery #VeterinaryMedicine #VetTech

Did you know that most High-Quality Hight-Volume Spay/Neuter clinics find pyometra surgery to be much less disruptive to their practice day than general practitioners? This stacked bar graph compares the percent of responses from HQHVSN clinics to the question, “How disruptive is a ‘routine’ pyometra surgery to your average HQHVSN clinic day?” and PPs to the question, “How disruptive is a ‘textbook’ pyometra surgery to your practice day?” from “Not at all” to “Majorly.” A recent manuscript co-authored with Jen Turner and Ashlee McCallin, Promoting access to care in pyometra treatment: pathways to collaboration between high-quality, high-volume spay-neuter clinics and private practices, in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) describes an opportunity to increase access to veterinary care for pyometra treatment via collaboration between High Quality High Volume spay neuter (HQHVSN) clinics and private practices (PP). Femoral Fracture Stabilization in Canine Patient This intraoperative photograph depicts the placement of a compression plate (LCP) along the femoral diaphysis in a dog, following a torsion-induced fracture. The fracture, resulting from a twisting force, caused significant displacement and instability, necessitating open reduction and internal fixation. The ends of the fracture were first placed together by using intramedullary pin and then the LCPlate provides rigid stabilization, allowing for optimal bone healing and minimizing complications. Post-operative care includes restricted activity, pain management, and monitoring for implant-related issues. #CanineOrthopedics #FemurFracture #TorsionForce #InternalFixation #VeterinarySurgery Surgery Partners, Inc Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Canadian Veterinary Medical Association Veterinary Information Network Worldwide Veterinary Service World Veterinary Association (WVA) Worldwide Veterinary Service World Veterinária

Our @White Lodge Veterinary Surgery practice has improved post-operative pain scoring audits and resulting practice protocols. Their work has been given a RCVS Knowledge Champion award. 🎉 They pain scored every patient 1-hour post-surgery - using the Glasgow Pain Scoring chart, and recorded all drugs given prior & during procedures - including rescue analgesia. The species, breed and type of operation was noted. Abdominal surgeries, bitch spays and other operations were found to have significantly higher pain scores than castrates, mass removals, dentals and cat spays. They then adapted protocols and undertook training with a European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia Diplomat. Practice protocols were adjusted including; starting to use lidocaine; attaching pain score charts to anaesthetic monitoring sheets; and, changing from ovariohysterectomies to ovariectomies. As a result, the percentage of dogs over the pain scoring threshold dropped from 24% to an average of 19% (lidocaine and ovariohysterectomy) and 10% (lidocaine and ovariectomy). The results showed adding lidocaine made an improvement to bitch spay, abdominal surgery and ‘other’ surgery pain scores. Sand colic surgery in horses is a critical procedure performed to remove sand and debris that has accumulated in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to colic symptoms. This condition can be life-threatening if left untreated. The surgery involves accessing the intestines through an abdominal incision to remove the sand and foreign material. Post-operative care is crucial for a successful recovery, as horses may require close monitoring and management to prevent complications. It is essential for horse owners and caretakers to be proactive in preventing sand ingestion and to seek immediate veterinary attention if colic symptoms arise. #SandColicSurgery #EquineHealth #VeterinaryCare Nazarabad Veterinary Hospital

What innovative, cost-effective solutions could revolutionise wound care in veterinary medicine? A recent paper published in the Journal of Veterinary Surgery evaluates the in vitro performance of a hybrid negative pressure wound therapy (h-NPWT) system that utilises a hospital's wall suction unit. The study compared the h-NPWT system to a commercial NPWT device, finding the h-NPWT system could maintain comparable negative pressures at the wound site. Interestingly, the addition of tubing between the wound and wall suction did not affect the negative pressure applied. This cost-effective h-NPWT system could provide a viable alternative for veterinary clinicians when commercial NPWT devices are not feasible.
