I’ve met many environmental managers who see their main job as data entry. This is a HUGE missed opportunity for the role. Environmental managers are experienced and skilled employees. Yet we’re dumping weigh tickets and lab reports on their desks and expect them to punch numbers into a spreadsheet. I went into environmental engineering to solve problems. And I’m pretty sure a lot of environmental managers and engineers feel the same way. We want to get out on site and solve problems. 👷♂️ It could be water treatment issues. It could be air permit issues. It could be spending time working through permit applications. We want to be business partners to the operations and production teams, helping them get ahead. But we’re often stuck playing defense because the spreadsheets demand constant attention: 👉 Asking for last month’s data 👉 Emailing spreadsheets around the company 👉 Cobbling together everyone’s data 👉 Updating calculations, tasks, due dates, etc. One hidden benefit of using tools like Mapistry, aside from removing the liabilities that come with spreadsheets, is that your environmental managers can get back to problem-solving. The data collection, reminders, formatting, running calculations, etc. is largely automated. Instead of playing catch-up, your team can play offense.
