I've noticed something about how early and mid-career professionals look for jobs, and I think it's important to talk about it. 🤐 Often, I see messages in job groups that go like this: 📌 'Hey everyone, I'm looking for a Product Intern role. I finished my CS degree in 2022 and I'm really into strategy. If you know about any chances, let me know.' 📌 This kind of message, though honest, doesn't really work the way people hope. It's a bit like when Michael Scott tried to 'declare bankruptcy' – it just doesn't solve anything. If you want to get your dream job, you need a better plan. Show what you've done, find someone who can guide you, and dive into areas that really interest you. Look at what experts in these fields are doing. Try doing similar things in your current job or look for opportunities in these areas. Just saying you want a new job or sending out your resume everywhere doesn't usually get you far. The best way to get that job you're dreaming of is to learn the basics, use them in your current job, and patiently build the right connections. 🗝 I get that everyone's in a hurry, especially with how the job market currently is, but remember, things work better when you take a steady and thoughtful approach. #careeradvice #professionalgrowth #careerdevelopment

✨️Reflecting on my career journey, from navigating job searches during the pandemic to securing my current role, has been a 🎢 rollercoaster of experiences. The search for internships in 2020/2021 took unexpected turns, and anticipating a possible recession in late 2022 added to the challenge. Despite setbacks, I persevered, and in spring 2023, I landed my current position. 🔍 Now, as I aim to find a role that aligns better with my degree, navigating through job descriptions and facing rejection emails has been draining. The recurring advice of "your job is out there" lingers, yet after four years of searching, I find myself pondering - is it truly within reach? 💭 #JobSearch #CareerJourney #Persistence #Reflecting #CareerGoals #JobMarket #Resilience

Graduation season is here, and I can’t believe it’s been 7yrs since my own at Old Dominion University . Initially, I faced uncertainty with no job or internship, starting as a recruiter unsure of matching my major. However, through hard work and determination, I found my path. Over seven years, I've learned that success is not about the starting point but making each step count. Here are key tips for new graduates entering the workforce or pursuing their passions: ✨Keep learning and stay open to new opportunities. ✨Build a strong network for advice and job opportunities. ✨Gain experience and skills, even if it's not your dream job. ✨Work with a career coach to define and achieve your career goals. ✨Manage your finances wisely, including savings and budgeting. ✨Seek mentors for career insights and guidance. ✨Don't let setbacks discourage you. Keep working towards your goals. Embrace the unknown, graduates. Take it day by day, rely on your support system, and stay true to yourself! #careeradvice #personalgrowth #2024graduates

Finding a Summer Job Has Been a Complete Struggle! After applying to over 50 positions, most of my applications have gone unanswered, and the few responses I’ve received have been rejections. It’s incredibly frustrating to put in so much effort and receive little to no feedback. The reality is that finding a job whether it’s a summer job or a part-time role to accommodate your studies has become a major challenge. This experience has shown me just how competitive the job market is, especially for students trying to get their foot in the door. I’m not sharing this to complain, but to highlight the difficulties many students are facing. I know I’m not alone in this struggle, and I want to acknowledge the persistence and resilience it takes to keep going despite the setbacks. To anyone else in the same boat: Keep pushing forward. Let’s support each other and share any advice or opportunities we come across. #JobSearch #SummerJob #StudentLife #Persistence #Resilience #Support

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 🦻 I attended a group session hosted by NATEA (North America Taiwanese Engineering & Science Association) where several speakers shared their experiences of working and job-seeking in the USA. Here are my key takeaways: ☕ About Coffee Chats 1. People are more willing to help you than you might think. 2. Ask someone every day if they would like to have coffee with you. 3. Being afraid of rejection is your biggest enemy. 💼 About Work 1. You should also take care of your emotional well-being at work, don't ignore the psychological stress. If you encounter unreasonable vacation restrictions at work, consider trying FMLA. 🫠 About Unemployment and Job Seeking: 1. Many people have been laid off during this period, but it has also allowed many to find more ideal jobs. 2. Thus, even though being laid off is tough and finding internships is challenging, those who bravely make changes ultimately have good outcomes. For all of us: In the end, everything will be fine 😊 #jobhunting #layoff #selfhelp

Something I never disclosed on LinkedIn before: I got a job offer in the summer of 2022 as a 1st semester Grad student in the U.S. I must have been the first one in my entire batch. I got the offer not because of what I learnt at school, the number of applications I sent (I hadn't even started job hunting then), the internship I did (I couldn't do an internship because I was a spring student). I got it because of who I am as a person, if I can say so myself. The opportunity that I got was from the Director of an SME, and here's how I was extended the offer. I got it because I took advantage of every opportunity I got in school in my first semester at Duke University. If they needed volunteers in a class, I would raise my hand. If the team needed a leader, I would be up for it. If the professor asked a question I knew something about, I would answer in the class. If a reading was assigned before the lecture, I would read it, even if hurriedly on the bus ride to school. As a first semester Spring student & a first generation immigrant, my disadvantages were more than I bothered to count. And so, I knew that if I didn't learn something every single day by just showing up, I wasn't going to make it. During the course of the entire semester, our professors kept introducing the entire class to some amazing folks from the industry. I always made it a point to connect with them on LinkedIn, and kept in touch. And that's how I eventually got my first offer. The U.S. job market is still recovering, with hiring pauses and stealth layoffs, so my most sincere advice to grad students everywhere is to be ready. Be ready to put in the work. Be ready to show up. Be ready to raise your hand. Be ready to volunteer. Be ready to take the first step. Be ready to initiate. If you don't, someone else will, and whoever does will go ahead in life. P.S. If you found this helpful, follow along on Shreya Mishra, as I share more from my academic & corporate life in the U.S. #internationalstudents #gradschool #jobhunting
